So here I'll stay! Ironic.
My home, my people, beside me. And when I think of tomorrow, there we are. This time it was just me, Tsireya and a couple of our friends who performed for the newcomers. Tsireya and I shared a smile as we swayed together to the beat of the drums, the bonfire lighting up her beautiful features. I had to laugh again as I saw Kiri's brother gawping at her. That boy is totally smitten, I smirked. My gaze quickly changed to find Kiri who held a thumbs up and mouthed:
"You look amazing," I blushed and grinned as she laughed.
At the end of the bonfire she bounced up to me and Tsireya, compliments flowing out of her like a waterfall. Her younger brother soon joined us, complimenting Tsireya.
"You were really beautiful- I mean good out there," he stumbled on his words, which left both of them a flustering mess.
"T-thank you, Lo'ak," I was wheezing at this point, leaning on Kiri who just rolled her eyes playfully. Watching two obviously head over heels teenagers try and fail to communicate with each other is the funniest thing to me... apart from watching Aonung faceplant.
The two lovebirds glared at us.
"You know, Neteyam couldn't take his eyes off you, Kātao!" Tsireya retaliated, still flustered. I smirked.
"Sorry to burst your bubble, dearest, innocent, little sister of mine, but ion know who you're talking about."
"Neteyam, my brother?" Kiri looked at me in disbelief.
"Look, sorry if I don't know all your names yet, but expect at least a week of incorrect names, cos my memory is terrible," I waved my hand in the air, dismissing the subject.
"Now, tell whoever this Natyam dude is-"
"Yes?"
I whipped around to see the boy who threw the coconut at me.
"OH! It's coconut boy!" I beamed. He raised an eyebrow at the nickname.
"Neteyam," he corrected. "Your singing was wonderful by the way, same goes to you," he nodded to Tsireya who smiled in response.
"Why thank you, Nnnnne- nat-. Nah, I think I'll just call you coconut boi," I shrugged, tuning back to the others, catching the look of confusion screwed on his face.
"What were we talking about?" like I said, bad memory. Lo'ak grinned evilly as Tsireya giggled.
"We were talking about how my bro couldn't take his eyes off you," Lo'ak teased. I made a sound of realisation then stayed silent for a moment. I suddenly turned again to face Neteyam pointing to his chest.
"WELP! That sounds like a you problem," I joked, as he looked shockingly down at my finger touching his chest before giving his brother the side eye.
I briskly turned and walked around the different Na'vi of the clan, leaving the group. Did I leave simply because I didn't want them to see the tiniest blush on my face, yes. Yes I did. Do I regret doing it? Not particularly cos I got to talk to freakin Jake Sully and his badass wife, Neytiri. I took one last glance back to see Neteyam giving Lo'ak a noogie and Tsireya and Kiri laughing at their antics.
"Thank you, for welcoming our children," Neytiri suddenly bowed her head in thanks, Jake following suit. Flustered, I wave my hands in front of me, shaking my head.
"I really haven't done much, I wasn't even there to welcome you all when you arrived!" I rambled. Yeah, I really need to work on my social skills.
"We see how you do not judge, even when everyone else does... that is more comforting than you think," Jake softly informed me, Neytiri nodded and put an arm around his waist unconsciously.
"I haven't danced or sung like that since I was young, thank you for the opportunity," Neytiri gave a genuine smile. She looked tired, but somewhat happy. I beamed right back at her, happy to know they were settling down alright.
As I was darting through groups, a sudden wave of longing and nostalgia hit me. I stopped in my tracks to look at the spot on the beach where I'd always escape to during these ceremonies. And surely enough, there stood the graceful, lonely body of grandma, dancing happily with the waves.
Oh, how I wanted to throw this heavy headpiece to the side and run to her, to the edge of the water, where I felt free. It felt like I was being torn from the inside out.
"Hey, you ok?" I snapped out of my haze, not realising how tight my jaw was. I whipped around to see Neteyam laying his hand on my shoulder. "We've been calling you for the last five minutes," his eyes expressed concern. Before I could reply, Aonung grabbed me by the wrist, dragging me back into the hustle of the ceremony. I didn't even try to fight him at this point, it's like all the energy was drained from my body.
Neteyam was left standing where we were, his brow furrowed in confusion. My eyes settled on his bright golden ones. I was still in a haze, everything felt more like a fever dream.
You'll lead the way, I suddenly turned my eyes to Aonung. This was one of the very few times I ever saw him genuinely smile at me, nevermind sing. That brought me back to my senses. I beamed right back at him. He may have been a dose ninety percent of the time, but he was still my brother; I would choose his happiness over mine, everytime.
You'll have our people to guide you, Tsireya joined us as we danced together, the three Olo'eyktan's children, just enjoying the small, precious moments we had with each other.
We'll build our future together,
Where we are,
Cause every path leads you back to,
Where you are,
I took one last, hesitant look back to grandma by the water.
You can find happiness right
Where you are, where you are.
The festivities ended shortly after eclipse, everyone equally exhausted as each other.
"Maybe this whole Olo'eyktan thing isn't so bad after all," I yawned to myself as I zonked out as soon as I entered our maruis.
