(Y'all get another song recommendation for this chapter: Emergency Contact by Pierce the Veil)
*Sutton's POV*
I woke up at some point in the middle of the night to a nurse coming in. I noticed that Noah fell asleep in the bed with me and the nurse wasn't too pleased by it.
"Noah," I shook him a little, him waking up a little easier than he normally does. "She has to check my vitals, can you get up?"
"Yeah, sorry," he mumbled. It's unfortunately a bit of an event for him to get up with his crutch. I chuckled at his messy hair and straightened myself out on the bed. The nurse shot me an appreciative look and checked on everything, deciding it all looked okay, and left as quietly as she came in. Noah looked around and saw that it was 4 am. "Why do they insist on checking on people at the weirdest times? They did this to me, too."
"They probably have to every certain amount of hours, if I had to guess," I offered. "I wonder if i have to stay in this gown."
"Maybe not, but we can ask them next time they come by and I ask someone to bring you some clothes," he offered. "I love you, but I'm going to try and get a few more hours of sleep. Do you want your iPad?"
"Do you have it?" I asked confused. I thought it was in the car with us and figured it had to have been ruined.
"Yeah, it somehow survived the wreck just fine. Danielle and Nic recovered what they could and were surprised by a lot of it being okay."
"Wait, did they see the wreck?" I felt my stomach sink.
"They saw the aftermath..." he trailed off. I felt my eyes fill with tears, thinking about how much it would have messed me up to see Danielle and Nic like that. Noah could tell and came back over to plant some kisses on my head. "I know. It gutted me when she told me."
My mind swirled thinking about what it must have looked like and it made me nauseous. Noah curled up on his cot and fell asleep quickly while I tried to distract with my iPad. I wish I had my Airpods, but I'll take what I can get. I found the Wi-Fi password on the nurse board and checked my emails, noting that Paramore had sent me a few things regarding work in the past week. I sent an email back filling them in on everything and to wish them a happy holidays before hopping over to work on some sketches. I kept thinking about Just Pretend, wishing that I could listen to it right now so that I could work on something for it, but ended up drawing a hand that was dangling a bouquet of dead roses.
I didn't realize how long I had been working on it until Danielle came in with a couple of bags of food and noticed it was 7 am now. I smiled weakly at her and started to lock up the iPad. "No, wait, what were you working on?" Noah prompted, who I guess woke up when Danielle came in. I smiled meekly and showed them, both of them peering over on their respective sides. "I love this, what was the inspiration?"
"Just Pretend," I answered simply, looking to meet his eyes. He smiled a little bit and kissed my head.
"What's Just Pretend?" Danielle asked as she handed Noah and I both chicken biscuits and sat on the edge of the bed. Noah plopped down in a chair, not needing to be standing on his crutch constantly.
"It's a new song that I wrote," Noah answered simply before taking a bite of his biscuit. Danielle nodded appreciatively as she ate her butter biscuit. She's been working towards going vegan but is mostly vegetarian now.
The doctor came by as we were finishing our food. "That smells good," he said with a chuckle, making us chuckle. "Was that your first substantial meal?"
"I ate some soup last night, so I guess second meal," I said cautiously.
"That's great. I just wanted to swing by and check on a few things, but we're going to start doing a few periodic oxygen tests to see how your natural breathing is doing in the hopes that you shouldn't need to be on oxygen when we release you in a few days, but it is still a possibility," he said just as cautiously, but I just nodded in understanding with an undertone of disappointment. He took my cannula out and I definitely felt a difference in how much I have to strain to breathe. He had me blow into this contraption that pushes up a little ball to a marker that tracks how hard I am blowing air; he gave an empathetic grimace and put the cannula back on. "Did you feel a difference?"
