chapter twenty-four:

"Are you ready?" Nour asked Danielle as she smoothed down her pant suit. She nodded as she looked around. They were in the court room, it being the first briefing for their case. It was to go over the divorce and who will have custody until the trial started.

"Mommy!" Danielle turned and saw Elias running over to her, Danielle nearly dropping to her knees as she embraced her youngest son, her tears falling down her face.

"Oh my baby..I missed you so much." Danielle sniffed as she rubbed his back.

"I missed you too, I don't wanna go back with them. I wanna stay with you, mommy. Please." Elias cried into her chest.

"Elias, stop all of that crying." Alfred's voice caused both Danielle and Nour to clench their jaw as she stood up, her son clinging to her leg. Mason walked next to him, his eyes turned to the ground as he glared, Hazel pushing him forward slightly.

"Hi mama." Mason breathed as he hugged her quickly, barely looking her in the face.

"What's wrong? What did they do to you guys? What did you do-"

"Nothing that wasn't deserved. He wants to be grown, he's gonna get dealt with the same exact way." Alfred hissed.

"If I find out you've been putting your hands on my children, we're gonna have much bigger problems than court." Danielle growled. Hazel scoffed, Danielle swallowing back the urge to bash her head into the wall.

"Please, we've been more parents the last three months than you have."

"Because you've given me no choice!" Danielle yelled, Mason jumping with a gasp as he pushed his face into her chest. Danielle looked down before looking at Alfred who glared at the back of his oldest sons head.

"Nour, take the boys for me while I speak to our lawyer. I'm reporting abuse! There's no way my baby should be flinching like that!"

"Yes ma'am." Nour breathed, grabbing Mason and Elias' hand. He pushed them away from the arguing that was happening in the hallway, hoping and praying that Alfred suddenly collapsed to the ground before asking God for forgiveness.

"I'm Nour. I'm sure your mama told you about me, right?" Nour asked as he walked them into the small room. Elias nodded with a smile, Mason also nodding with a frown on his face.

"My dad said you're her boyfriend or something. He stay calling my mother a hoe to my face and I hate him for it because I know she's not like that. My mother is not a hoe. If anything, he's the hoe and I told his bum ass that." Mason responded as he plopped down on the bench. Nour could tell which out of the two took on Danielle's temper, patting Masons head before sitting between them.

"Your mother is nowhere near that. Your father is upset because he couldn't love your mother the way she deserved so she dealt with it. He's bitter and angry so he tries keeping you both away from her. Your mother loves you both so so much. I don't think you understand how much it would mean to some people to have a mother that fights for them the way your mother fights for you both." Nour breathed honestly, the emotion thick in his voice as he spoke to the two boys.

"So why didn't she come? I hate my new school. I hate Hazel. She tryna act like she's my mother knowing damn well she's out of pocket. I'm not dumb. I'm thirteen years old. I know shit. So why is she tryna tip toe around me like I'm stupid? Elias is a baby. Sophia is a baby. I am not. Tell it to me straight. You're fucking my dad and wanna play side bitch-"

"Wow, you surely take after your mother." Nour chuckled causing Mason to shake his head with a slight smile. He didn't mean to come off as aggressive, he was just frustrated and confused.

"Tell me..does your father hit you? What's going on in that house? If you tell me, we'll be able to help." Nour whispered.

"Tell him, Mason. Please. I want to stay with mommy." Elias sniffed. Mason sighed, Nour discreetly hitting record on his phone.

"We moved to Georgia and suddenly he wants to be this big mean man that runs the house. Mama was always the one to take care of us. He was never home. When we don't listen he locks us in our room with no food or water, and he hits me and makes Elias watch." Nour felt enraged by the young boys words, looking up to see Danielle by the doorway with tears streaming down her face. She overheard everything, walking over and taking her eldest son into her arms.

"You're never going back there. Ever. I promise you that. We have to go speak to the judge now." Danielle sniffed, Mason crying into her chest. Elias was asleep on Nour's shoulder, Nour looking down at the jet-lagged young boy. Danielle smiled slightly, Nour lifting him up and carrying him out of the room.

"Your honor, Ms. Sanaa not only exhibits extreme behaviors of mental instability, but could also be considered a danger to herself and her children. The fire at the office and the destruction of their home that's been documented is proof of that."

"Anything else?" The judge asked Alfred's lawyer, the woman shaking her head as she sat down in her seat. Rayan stood, unbuttoning his suit jacket as he immediately organized different piles of papers on his table. Both parties watched, Nour smirking slightly.

She's going to win, and there's going to be consequences to their actions.

"Is the defense ready?" The judge asked. Rayan nodded, looking down at Danielle who stared at the table with wide eyes from all the evidence.

"As we can see here, there's immense evidence built against Mr. Haines and his new found fiancée. This has been strategically planned, Danielle building everything she's had from scratch. She never took money from her ex husband even for her practice. Her father, Adel Sanaa, paid most of her tuition and she reimbursed him once she opened her practice. The court allowed Alfred and Hazel to have temporary custody due to the fire that they claimed they knew nothing about. However, evidence proves otherwise."

"What evidence?" Alfred's lawyer hissed as she stood causing the judge to ask for order.

"There's more than enough evidence here. There's receipts and bank transactions of Hazel paying off an arsonist so when Danielle claims her insurance, Alfred can file for alimony since she is the one who filed for divorce. Secondly, Hazel and Alfred have been planning this entire ordeal for the last three years. They planned on taking sole custody of the boys Mason and Elias so Danielle wouldn't have access to them. Alfred took the cars as well as almost seventy-five percent of money put in their shared accounts before changing all passwords so Danielle wouldn't have access."

"Objection! None of this was covered with us before this briefing-"

"Overruled. This all seemed credible to me." The judge responded as she flipped through the copies that were given to her.

"There's more, your honor. I'm sure the rest are self-explanatory. Not to mention there's new evidence of child abuse in their new home in Atlanta, Georgia-"

"Objection!"

"Where's the evidence for the child abuse?" The judge asked. Rayan walked over to the judge and handed her the phone. She adjusted the mic, pressing play. Mason's voice filled the court room, the witnesses gasping as Alfred stood up while shaking his head.

"He's lying! That little bastard is lying! I would never-"

"Never what?! The same way you put your hands on me, you started doing it to him!" Danielle yelled, the judge slamming her hammer down to gain order back in the court.

"Order! Now!" She yelled, the court room going quiet. Mason cried into Nour's chest, Nour comforting both of the boys as he sat with them in the back.

"It seems as though Danielle has more than enough evidence to prove the malicious intentions between the plaintiff and the defendant. As a court official, it's important for me to decide what is in the best interest of the children before anyone else. This young boy vividly stated how much he'd rather be with his mother and that his father is beating him. It will be in my best judgement to place ALL children from the Haines with Danielle Sanaa until further notice. This court is adjourned."
