chapter one:
"How did what Samantha said make you feel?" Dr Sanaa asked as she crossed her legs, her cocoa brown skin shining under the light due to the shea butter she used so religiously. Her skin was growing dry, her slow aging haunting her everyday. She made sure to moisturize, to pluck and prep herself every day and night.
The young couple that sat across from her on the large sofa reminded her of that. She wondered..what could such a young couple possibly worry about? They didn't have to worry about dry ankles. They didn't have to worry about nodding off with a candle lit while the wine glass tipped onto their white bed sheets from slipping from their tired fingers. They didn't have to worry about if this would be their last period for the rest of their lives.
Danielle did. Every night as she stared at her sleeping husbands back who never touched her anymore except for the routine kiss on the cheek. Who never seemed to have regard about his comments on how dry her skin has suddenly become.
"It made me feel..less than a woman. I understand I'm the masculine of the relationship, but at every moment? I can't get my feet rubbed, or kisses? I'm still a woman. I identify as a woman." Her patient exclaimed. Danielle felt the anger radiate off of Taina, nodding as she wrote in her notes.

"Well..Samantha, do you have anything to add?" Danielle asked. She was grateful this was her last couple for the night. She couldn't wait to see her boys and soak in the bath. Her rose scented bath salts called her name as well as her lover Chardonnay.
Oh how she loved Chardonnay. She felt more married to the clear liquid than to her husband, but as a marriage counselor she couldn't vocalize that. Not to a soul. How would she look? The doctor for broken marriages being unable to fix her own?
Pitiful.
"..I just thought we had a dynamic set up that didn't need to be vocalized. I mean..you have me home. I don't work because you refuse me to. You pay all the bills, I cook I clean. Does that not sound...what's the word?" Samantha asked as she snapped her fingers, breaking Danielle from her thoughts.
Patriarchal? Old stylish? 1920's?
"Traditional?" Danielle asked.
"Yeah. I think..yeah."
"So you want traditional? Gender roles?" Danielle asked.
"Wow. Then why didn't you marry a fucking man then?" Taina hissed, the bell going off indicating that their session was over. Danielle praised the Lord quietly as she shut off her alarm and stood up.
"Save that thought for next time..homework..Samantha do something nice and out of the ordinary for Taina. See you next week." Danielle stated curtly as she led the bickering couple through the wooden doors.
"Sheesh. Lord, help them." Danielle sighed with her eyes closed as she leaned against the door, before walking to her desk. She packed up her bag, letting out a breath while slipping on her bubble slides that her oldest son got her for Christmas. They were so silly to her, but the charms spelled out 'best mom' and made her smile every time.
"Hey, Al. I'm on my way home..did you pick up the kids from after school?" Danielle asked after dialing her husbands number, the gruff man answering after a few rings.
