chapter thirty-nine;

~thanksgiving day~

"Mason, get dressed! Your grandparents will be here any minute!" Danielle was stressed out. She was cranky, her hips and lower back aching her and she was aggravated with everyone. She woke up that way this morning, Nour being the first one in her path who realized the sudden attitude switch. It's been a few days since their chat with Mason. He was the one who told Elias that Alfred was dead. Elias didn't even flinch, saying that he thought Nour was his daddy already.

It made Danielle emotional, the older woman running out of the room and sobbing for hours straight. She locked everyone out, Nour ending up having to unscrew the doorknob to get inside.

And now she had an attitude with absolutely everyone.

"I'm dressed! Gosh." Mason grumbled causing Nour to chuckle as he adjusted the young man's collar. He was in a button down and a pair of jeans along with the nike sneakers that Nour had gifted them a few weeks before. They were unreleased, Danielle learning not to question Nour about his resources or connects.

"Don't worry Danielle, I have the boys. Get yourself ready and take your time."

"Get yourself ready and take your time." Danielle mocked with a long face before rolling her eyes and frowning as she slipped on her outfit. Her stomach was large and noticeable and it made her nervous considering she didn't tell her parents about being pregnant. She didn't tell Nour that they didn't know, hoping and praying that it didn't turn into a big deal.

Tonight both of their families would be combined. Nour's father was visiting from Egypt, this being the first time Danielle will be meeting him and Nour's God father. Nour didn't give too much background, Danielle already sensing the tension which made her antsy.

"You okay?" Nour's voice broke Danielle from her thoughts as she finished flat ironing her wig. She was in a red jumper suit, her stomach protruding in the front which made her feel nauseous. She knew her mother would have something to say and prayed that she was able to hold her temper. She wanted the night to be perfect but knew with her luck that wasn't going to happen.

"I'm fine. Are the boys downstairs? My father will be here any minute." Danielle's voice was tense as she stared down at her jewelry box. Nour sighed as he wrapped his arms around her waist. He leaned down and kissed her bare shoulder before kissing the side of her face causing her eyes to close.

"I told you I'd take care of them. Nura has Sophia. She's dressed and fed. Relax, mama. You're not doing this alone anymore, remember?" Nour asked as his hands slid under her belly, rubbing it softly causing her to moan quietly as she leaned back against him.

"You look beautiful, and so does our babygirl. Relax for a second. Okay?" Nour asked as he lifted her stomach slowly to relieve her hips and lower back from the weight of their child, Danielle letting out a satisfied sigh as she leaned back against her lover, her large ring glistening under the bedroom light as she gripped his arm.

"I'm sorry, I'm just worried. My mother can be a lot and I know with Alfred's death, this is going to be so awkward. And then I have to take them to his parents house for the weekend because I promised them. Then there's the funeral and I just..I'm drained, papa." Danielle whimpered quietly as she laid her head against his chest. He nodded while listening attentively before leaning down and kissing her forehead.

"You have nothing to worry about, my love. I know you think you do, but you don't. We are all here in this together and I want you to come to me when you feel overwhelmed."

"I know and I'm sorry. I still have to remind myself. We're barely six months in and shit is heavy. Fast. I'm just not used to such a fast and secure pace. I tell my patients all the time to let things flow but I have a hard time with that."

"Because when you did you got hurt. He betrayed you in a terrible way and it turned him into a monster that hurt you and your children. He knew what he lost and now I'm here to pick up the pieces and put them back together. Just take a deep breath and let's get through the night. Then, we'll talk more to ease your mind. Okay?" Nour asked quietly as Danielle turned to face him. Danielle nodded with a soft smile, Nour grinning and kissing the ring that he gifted her while massaging her palm when the doorbell rang.

"Let's do this, okay? Just a few hours with some food." The couple walked down the long spiraled stairs with their fingers entwined. Adel had wide eyes as he looked around the beautiful residence.

"This is an upgrade." Daphne whispered loud enough for Danielle to hear causing her to roll her eyes at her mother. She reached the end of the steps, both of her parents looking over and immediately staring at her stomach.

"Baba, mama..welcome." Danielle breathed nervously. Her hands were trembling as she kissed her fathers cheek before leaning over and attempting to hug her mother as Nour greeted Adel in Arabic. The woman moved away slightly from Danielle, glaring up at her with the demise she's seen most of her life when she didn't meet her mothers expectations.

"You're..pregnant?" Daphne hissed quietly while gripping Danielle's hand. Danielle pulled away and stepped back slightly as she swallowed away the tears that threatened to fall.

"Adel, I can't be here. Not with this going on. This is a shame to the church and your family. Your husband is dead-"

"Ex-husband. He's my ex husband because he hurt me but you don't seem to care." Danielle growled back. Nour shook his head while grabbing Danielle's waist.

"Daphne, stop it. Seriously, you're being disrespectful. We haven't even been here two minutes." Adel hissed at his wife. She looked over at him with angry brown eyes before walking off and sitting down on the couch in the living room.

"Dad, it's okay. If she wants to leave she's free to leave. I knew this was going to happen." Danielle sniffed.

"No. We aren't going anywhere. Nour, this is a beautiful home and I thank you for taking my daughter and grandchildren in. I can tell you love and respect her and that's all that matters to me. I pray that your baby is growing healthy and I'm grateful to be alive to see them come into the world. I'll talk to your mother, okay?" Adel breathed as he patted Nour's shoulder while looking at Danielle. Danielle nodded, her face still full of pain which tugged at Nour's heart strings.

"Grandma! Grandpa!" Elias and Mason screamed as they ran to the living room with Nura following behind them. Danielle watched as her mothers face brightened at the sight of her grandchildren, her tears welling in her eyes as she shook her head.

"Who's that?" Adel asked as they walked into the living room. Nura stood in a silk halter dress that held her tall body beautifully. There was a slit on the leg that exposed her tatted thigh that sat in long platform heels. Her hair was pinned up, some of her curls falling around her face and perfecting her look.

"That's my sister, Nura. She lives with us while her property is being renovated." Nour responded with a smile.

"Pleasure to meet you both. Danielle is an amazing person and I'm grateful that she's found a place within our family and vice versa."

"Hm." Daphne huffed while staring down at the ground smugly. Nura side-eyed her before looking at Nour who just shook his head while rubbing Danielle's back.

"Well..let's get started, shall we?"
