chapter eighty-nine: eight months later.

"How are you feeling today?" The therapist asked Danielle as she sat across from the doctor she's been seeing for the past four months. Nubia babbled as she banged her toy on the stroller cup holder causing Danielle to smile.

"I'm good, today. I feel..light. How are you?" Danielle asked as she crossed her legs. She felt good in her beige turtle neck and light blue jeans. Her hair was flat with curls toward the end, her body in the best shape it's been since having the miscarriage.

After that night, Danielle fell into a deep depression that scared her family, especially her children. She was catatonic, laying in bed all day and night. She didn't speak and barely showered, Adel having to give her sponge baths from how frozen she was.

Mason and Elias did their best to be there for her, laying next to her and talking to her about their day. They spoke about their visits with Nour, who saw them every other weekend with Adel's permission. Nubia was old enough to eat solid foods and formula, so Adel wasn't too concerned about having to feed her.

He just wanted his daughter to be okay. Nasir, along with Nura, Taina, Sage and Angel came to visit and help with the children from time to time. Then once the kids were asleep, they'd stay in the room with Danielle and joke around to show that they were there for her through anything.

Adel didn't allow Nour to see her out of fear that she'd act irrationally with the state she was in. Nour understood, breaking apart as he constantly blamed himself for everything. He was a mess himself, losing weight from not eating and isolating himself from everyone except the kids.

A month after things went left, life started to get a little better for the separated couple. Danielle broke out of her catatonic state and the first thing she did was hug her children. Adel found her in the room they shared, curled up between her sons while holding her daughter to her chest.

After having a long talk with her father, Danielle decided it was time to be alone for a while and get herself together. So she started going to therapy, taking a break from her practice and deciding to retire early until she figured out her next steps. She never once in her life took time to take care of herself and figure out who she was outside of her family.

She started going to the gym and jogging around the neighborhood, eating healthier and being more active overall. She signed up for the YMCA where she'd go with the kids three days out of the week. Mason and Elias would play in the kids area, Nubia staying in the daycare since she was old enough. She was thriving and Danielle was proud.

The last six months without Nour was hard. She thought about him and prayed for him almost every night in secret. She knew that she missed him, but also knew that the space was more than needed. They both had things that they needed to work on before it turned even more toxic.

Even the most perfect couple had their issues and and as a marriage counselor, Danielle needed to accept that.

They never consulted with a lawyer, Danielle leaving things unspoken as she avoided the Abdul home as much as possible. There was an unspoken agreement, the kids being picked up by Nura or dropped off by Adel every other weekend to visit their father. It was a routine that simply fell into place and Danielle was content.
