"Are you nervous?" Auden asked Cillian as they sat in the back seat of their rideshare, heading to Charles's annual holiday party.
Cillian shook his head, "Not at all."
But Auden could tell he was lying, as he sat there drumming his fingers on her bare thigh.
Auden moved her eyes from the window towards Cillian. He was wearing dark slacks with a light blue button up that was tucked in, with the first two buttons undone at the top to reveal his collarbone. He wore a long dark jacket to protect from the cold air that had set in over Dublin. Auden noticed that his hair was freshly cut, so it no longer fell all the way across his forehead hiding his eyes.
He was looking out the window, chewing on the fingernails of his free hand. Auden sighed, interlocking her slender fingers with ones on her leg and squeezing gently. Cillian's head turned towards her and he gave her a small, reassuring smile.
His nerves were warranted. Admittedly, Auden had some anxiety as well. They both knew that Jenni and Patrick were going to be there, and neither of them wanted to deal with either of them. But, Auden had to be at the party as an employee and Cillian respected that. Charles had already made Auden promise that there would be no drama, and Auden would stick to her word.
When they got to the party, Auden could tell that it was quite packed. There was some people loitering outside, and Auden immediately knew it was the press.
"Lovely," Cillian said sarcastically, "I should've suspected they would be here."
Auden bit her lip, her anxiety level now through the roof. The last thing she wanted was pictures of her plastered across the tabloids tomorrow.
"Let's just get this over with," Auden replied, her jaw clenching as Cillian nodded. He leaned in suddenly and planted a kiss on her temple.
"Follow my lead. It'll be okay," he whispered, before pushing open his door.
Cillian rushed to the passenger side to help her out of the car, causing her stomach to do flips. He always went out of his way to be a gentleman. She gripped his outstretched hand, his palm rough and warm against hers, as he helped her onto the sidewalk. Auden adjusted the bottom hem of her dark-blue cocktail dress, shivering as a gust of cold air blew past.
