Xavier couldn't sleep.

Visions filled his mind—of love and lust, of kisses and hurt, of him and her. They tugged at the deepest parts of his soul, sending waves of unbearable pain through his body.

Why!?

He knew that meeting Subhadra again would no longer be by chance. His mind had already begun to betray him, illusions clouding his thoughts.

Two weeks had passed, yet home was no longer free of her presence. The knowledge that she was in the same city, breathing the same air, was driving him toward madness. He had started hearing her voice: her giggles of excitement whenever he explained something interesting, her playful shushing when he touched her food, her soft moans when he kissed her neck.

Xavier was losing his mind.

It was raining outside. His restless eyes blinked faster with each lighting that crossed his bedroom. How blissful his life would have been if he hadn't had the guts to flirt with random girls in college.

His face drew a sad smile as he thought of the day when he had flirted with her for the first time.

Subhadra Kumari Singh, Rank: 510. Why come here to the land of poor NIT?

That's none of your business.

It's my business if such a beautiful little babe gets lost in the world of darkness.

Thanks, but I would appreciate it if you shove your concern up your ass and leave.

Ha! Darling is sassy it seems.

And she had slapped him, her palm landing loudly on his cheek.

People thought it was a very unromantic start to their love story, but he believed it was perfect.

She hadn't giggled at his silly flirting, nor had she ignored him. She had been direct, straightforward, and unflinching. She had slapped him to show that flirting wasn't the way to win over her confidence. And he knew he deserved it—a much-needed reality check.

Don't ever dare to call me darling.

Her gaze had that fiery note, so intense that he had fallen deep in those before realizing it. And she had chosen him when he had proved his worth to claim her as his darling.

"Subhadra!" he screamed, his booming voice drowning out the thunder outside.

He closed his eyes, trying to forget everything. It wasn't easy to love someone, lose yourself to them, and then tear open your heart to let them walk away. It wasn't easy to avoid feeling angry at yourself for allowing someone to make you feel loved, to feel claimed.

Subhadra had claimed his life.

Her hands had once held all the power to break him, and now he was fighting desperately to avoid self-destruction. He was dangerously close to letting go—all the hard work of ignoring his feelings for years, nearly undone for just one meeting, one chance at closure.

He picked up his phone and saw several missed calls and texts from Samiksha. He'd been ignoring her calls for the past week. His phone pinged again, and this time, he couldn't bring himself to ignore her message.

'Xav, please pick up your damn phone- Iksha.'

He tried to steady his breathing, to calm his mind. After a few moments, he dialed her number. "Hello?"

"Xav, where are you?" Samiksha asked.

"Does it matter?" Tears blurred his vision.

"We were best friends, Xav. What happened to us?" she sighed. Samiksha was the only person who had tried to mediate, fighting against the divorce for both him and Subhadra. She had been angry, especially at him, for reasons he could only guess. He assumed she saw him as the villain—the one who had abandoned her sister-in-law on a whim. Samiksha had bonded closely with her in-laws, considering Subhadra her sister, and she had judged her own best friend harshly for the failed marriage.

"I don't know," he replied. After the divorce, Samiksha hadn't called him, hadn't checked on him even once. Krishna, on the other hand, had kept in touch, but she had vanished from his life, despising him as if he were a vile man who'd betrayed her sister.

He heard her mumbling something about "stupid," "mistakes," and "Subhadra." A pounding headache crept into his temples. "Iksha, goodbye."

Just as he was about to end the call, he heard her voice again, and his grip on the phone tightened, his knuckles turning white.

"Xavier, it's Subhadra."

He disconnected abruptly, hurling the phone away, screaming in anguish and pain.
