"Hello, Chakudi!"

A smile tugged at the corner of Krithika's lips. "Very busy?" she asked, sipping her coffee while mocking Rathna's carefree attitude.

Comically raising his brows, he questioned, "Who, me?" Leaning back into the comfort of the cafeteria chair, he crossed his arms behind his head. "Well, unlike your boyfriend, I'm just a simple employee of Xhasis. I get paid well, but I don't have to lose my mind over every tiny thing."

Your boyfriend.

Krithika flustered. "He's not my boyfr—"

"Is it?" He stared at her face. "Well, surprise, Chakudi, I have eyes, very good visual strength, and an excellent capacity to notice things." Narrowing his eyes, he continued, "You agree or not, he's your boyfriend. Dating for almost half a year, and you keep denying plain facts."

"That's not a long time."

"Have you seen that man? The way he looks at you whenever you cross him?"

"Why are you studying him!?" she hissed.

He threw his hands up in exasperation. "Do you even listen to what I say? I just told you—I notice things."

Oh, then why haven't you noticed Rashi yet?

Shaking his head, he continued, "Chakudi, he's completely smitten. He keeps smiling like a loon in the general meetings. Don't get me wrong, but Mr. Xavier L. Joseph never showed any emotion, let alone happiness. I've been under him for four years now, and I can confidently attest to that."

"He was a cheerful boss even before we started dating," she said hesitantly.

"Do you love him or not?" he asked bluntly.

Her hands pressed against her forehead as she tried to think of a way out of the question. It was a rather difficult one, considering she had no prior expertise in such emotions. What was love?

Xavier had become her close confidant. She had shared her strained relationship with her parents, her struggles with prickly sexism in her small town, and society in general. He had listened with a grim expression, nodding in agreement. He had looked distant, as if he wanted to share something with her but never did, instead commenting, "I know how some men are nothing but monsters." She had agreed.

She had shared her financial anxieties, and he had said with a soft smile, "Darling, you're earning well, and I'm sure you'll do great in the future. Your hard work shines brighter than the fucking Sun," completely supporting her independence instead of spewing nonsense about his own wealth.

That was the beauty of Xavier Lucifer Joseph—he listened to her cry about petty daddy issues, her parsimonious habits, and everything else. He had all the patience in the world to let her rant, silently humming in agreement.

Once, she had felt frustrated with his silence and snapped, "What? Are you just going to hmm to everything?" He had laughed loudly. "I can give my opinion on a few things, sweetheart. But you might have a better idea about cinema since I genuinely don't know anything about Alaipayuthey. I only watch documentaries." She had retorted, "Mani Ratnam is such a genius. You're missing out on so much," and they had watched the movie together.

The only time he had shut her mouth was when she blabbered about her insecurities regarding her skin tone and body shape. His eyes had darkened as he asked huskily, "Do you know what you do to me?" Pressing his body against hers, she had whimpered, feeling his arousal against her abdomen. "Do you know how fucking gorgeous you are?" And then he had kissed her as if his life depended on it.

She could be herself with him—no guards needed to shield herself. She trusted him with everything in her life. She knew he wouldn't h—

You...trust him?

"Krithika, are you okay?" Rathna asked empathetically. "I was just... I don't know. I just don't want you to get hurt or..." He sighed. "Under his thick skin and all the ruthlessness, Xavier sir has a golden heart. Most of the employees are delighted to see him happy."

She stared at him.

"You...you're scared that I'll hurt him, aren't you?" She asked. Rathna's words felt like a hot blade cutting through her. "Why would you think that?"

He remained silent for a moment. It felt like eons had passed, her heart weighing like a boulder in her chest.

"Because I can see love in his eyes for you, but you never answer."
