"You were offering your almost-naked self to the eyes of all the ladies on the coast of Italy, weren't you?" Krithika asked, stirring the pot of Upma. "Leaving your fiancée in Chennai and trying to seduce some Italian belle. Such admirable qualities in a man, Xav."
Krithika had taken the day off from work. Her manager had grumbled, "Again?" to which she had replied, "It's critical. I have an emergency."
And it was. She had missed Xavier immensely, and the moment he arrived, she wanted nothing but to be with him. It had felt like a life-or-death situation. Besides, she had enough paid leave to disappear for over two weeks if she wanted to.
Shaking his head, Xavier smiled. "You've added too much water. The Upma's going to be gooey."
"I'm not competing on MasterChef India. Learn to adjust your sophisticated palate to whatever I cook." She turned to Ponnamma, the cook. "Yenne, correct thane?" she asked, prompting the poor woman to agree with her, before moving to collect plates from the shelf.
Looking at Xavier, Ponnamma mouthed, "Paapa angry?" and gave him a tight-lipped smile, her eyes landing on the pot of nearly liquid breakfast. He motioned for her to leave them alone, and she slipped past him, whispering, "Thambi, no eat... I'll make food later."
Grinning like a clown, he grabbed Krithika's arm and pulled her closer. "Rather than the aroma of desi ghee, I smell the sweet jealousy of my love in this kitchen." Turning off the hob, he hugged her, his eyes fixed on her lips. "Your lips hold my world, and you ask if I seek death elsewhere?"
"You and your poems."
He didn't mind her snarky remark.
"The moment when a new life is born in this universe, that nanosecond I write a thousand words for you in my heart. There are millions of letters for you hidden deep within me, still unsent, still unread, oh, how should I convey it to you?"
Angrily squirming in his hold, she hummed. "Hmm..."
"The beauty that a blind eye appreciates, my Kanmani, I dream of that every night. For this Lucifer, it is nothing but the image of your laugh. Your melodious tunes compete with that of the divine flute, oh, how Lord Krishna would envy me to not be able to play it."
She smiled.
"Oh darling, before the sun rises in the morning I find a ray of something, and it's not of any other belle but your light. What could the Apsaras do to me, as I find them to be nothing but bland in front of you?"
Krithika wanted him to stop with his treacherous poetry, which made her forget everything. She always felt that Xavier had his way with her, by singing all these stupid lines and kissing her with his sweet words.
