If the villagers hadn't all been out, collecting the harvest in the fields, miles away from their homes, then they would have wondered at the inn door loudly slamming as it was flung open, and the sprinting Ranger who began to run down the street.

They would have also wondered at the black clothed man who stood next to one of the houses, holding a throwing knife, a man they didn't recognize and would treat with suspicion. As it was, Crowley was so distracted and distraught that he did not realize the man was there, even when the man began to move forwards.

Crowley had made it about ten feet from the inn when a throwing dagger flew straight towards him, hitting him just above the heart, making him cry out on pain as he fell to his knees.

The world darkened around him as he hit the ground hard.
