Vol. 3 Ch. 26 Aftermath

Weiss' POV

After Yang and Y/N ran off to find Blake, the rest of us made our way to the landing pads where Port and Oobleck were overseeing as Air buses transported civilians and students to the established safety zone in Vale.

After a while, I turned my head to see an injured Blake carrying an unconscious Yang, who was also missing her right arm. I turned my attention back to Blake and said, "Blake! I'm glad to see you two. I assume Nightingale's heading this way as well?"

Blake choked back some tears as she shook her head and answered, "He's gone, Weiss. He was shot by a barely functional Dalek and then a high-ranking member of the White Fang named Adam stabbed him through the chest. His body was dead, but he never got the chance to regenerate to the next one."

I held my hands over my mouth and gasped as I felt a few tears go down my face. As much as I didn't want to believe that Y/N was truly gone, I knew that it was very unlikely that Blake would lie about it, especially considering the current state of everything. I felt myself continue to cry miserably as I was slowly forced to come to terms with the idea that Y/N, my Time Lord and the love of my life, was gone forever. I wiped away my tears as I stared at what was left of Beacon in disbelief.

After a few minutes, Zwei barked suddenly, causing me to turn around to see Ruby running up to me as she said, "Oh, I found you!" I replied and said, "Ruby, where have you─" Then Ruby cut me off as she answered and said, "Don't worry, I'm fine! What's going on?"

Unsure of what to say, I lowered my gaze sadly. Ruby then said, "Weiss? What is it?" I stepped aside, giving Ruby a clear view of Blake and Yang lying on the ground. Both girls had bandages wrapped around their wounds, and the latter was still unconscious.

Behind them sat Nora and Ren, who are also too battered and bruised to fight. Blake reached over, placed her hand on Yang's, and said, "I'm sorry." Ruby reached out and opened her mouth to say something, but in her emotional state, she didn't know what to say. Blake curled up, closing her eyes as she repeated, "I'm so sorry." Ruby spoke and said, "Yang..."

Sun walked over and said, "Hey. She's gonna be okay. The soldiers have a ship ready to take you guys to Vale." Nora spoke up and said, "But Jaune and Pyrrha are still missing."

Nora attempted to stand, but she quickly sat back down, groaning and holding her side. Ruby replied and said, "What!?" Sun spoke up once more and said, "Look, guys, that giant Grimm is circling the school! Even the White Fang are pulling out! We all have to go, now!" Ren replied and said, "We're not... leaving!"

He stood up, but then fell to his knees with a groan. Sun turned and casted a worried look at Blake. Ruby spoke up and said, "I'll find them... I'll find them, and I'll bring them back." I interjected and said, "No! We will find them." I then turned to Nora and Ren and said, "Watch after Blake and Yang. We'll be back."

Taiyang's POV

It had been a couple days since Ruby had finally woken up. Currently I was watering the plants in the garden, when I started to hear a bit of commotion coming from the front yard. Thinking about the possibility of the noise being Grimm, I cautiously made my way around the house, only to see a woman, who was roughly my age with curly blonde hair, supporting an unconscious young man in his early 20s, if not late teens, in her arms. The man had blue hair with some strands of brown hair mixed in near the front.

The woman noticed me and gestured me to help her. I jogged over to her and said, "What's going on? Is he okay?" She nodded and said, "Yes, he's fine. His body just needs to rest for a few hours undisturbed. Would you mind if we took him inside?" I nodded and said, "Sure. Follow me."

I helped her carry the man inside the house and led her upstairs to the spare bed that used to be Yang's bed in Ruby's room. She laid him on the bed and covered him with a blanket. As she did this, Ruby entered the room and said, "Dad? What's going on? Who are these two people?"

I turned to her and said, "I'm not quite sure." The woman said, "I'll explain everything if we head back downstairs." I nodded and we headed down to the dining room and sat at the table.

The woman took a deep breath, let it out, and said, "If I'm not mistaken, you're Ruby Rose, and you're her father, Taiyang Xiao Long, yes?" We both nodded hesitantly and I said, "Yes." The woman let out a sigh of relief, then turned to Ruby, and said, "Good. Now Ruby, did your friend Weiss Schnee ever mention anything about meeting somebody named River Song?"

Ruby was silent for a moment before she nodded and said, "Yeah, I think so. I believe Weiss said that River was the Nightingale's brother's wife or something." The woman nodded and said, "Correct. Well, that's who I am. I'm River Song. I'm pretty sure that the Nightingale told you and your teammates about him being a Time Lord and his ability to regenerate, yes?"

Ruby nodded and River said, "Well, that'll make this even easier to tell you. That man upstairs is the Nightingale." Ruby looked at River shocked and said, "But Blake and Weiss said that he was killed before he could regenerate, so how could that be him?"

River shrugged and said, "I don't know how exactly personally, especially since I wasn't with him when that happened. I'm only here now because the Nightingale himself gave me these time coordinates with the message that I'd need to help him. Now for the current him that's asleep upstairs, he hasn't given me that message yet."

I spoke up and said, "Alright, but why couldn't he just explain this to us himself?" River sighed and said, "Because whenever a Time Lord regenerates, it's best if they rest for a few hours afterwards so their body can properly finish regenerating on the inside. He should be fine when he wakes up."

Ruby and I both nodded in understanding and I said, "So River, what should we do when he wakes up?" River took a deep breath and replied, "If he asks for anything specific to eat, just let him have it. After that, just tell him where he can find Weiss. I'm sure the two of them will need each other after everything that happened at Beacon."

River then stood up and said, "If you don't mind, I'd like to stay until he wakes up." I smiled and said, "I don't mind at all. I mean, technically speaking, you are his family afterall."

She smiled and said, "Thanks, Mr. Xiao Long. I appreciate it. But let's keep this between us. The person who was behind the Fall of Beacon, whoever they are, they most likely still think that they killed a Time Lord. So I think it's best to let them keep thinking that for as long as possible. Doing so will give the Nightingale the element of surprise when he needs it most."
