Matt

Ma wanted to have dinner with the kids, so Nora invited them. I didn't expect it to include Friday night fights.

The front door opened with a lot of yelling. I stood in the doorway as the fruit of my loin argued while my daughters and son-in-law watched.

"Oh, boo fucking hoo, Deacon! No one gives a shit if your pride got wounded," Nate said.

"Screw you, Nate! You could have said something, but you didn't!" Deacon yelled.

"Who cares? If it's not one thing, it's another!" Elias yelled.

"You should care about other people than yourself!" Deacon shouted.

I put my middle finger and thumb between my lips and blew. The boys stopped fighting and looked at me.

I walked toward them. "Tori, Gabe, and Gia, go into the kitchen while I speak with my boys."

"You don't need to tell me twice," Tori said.

Tori, Gabe, and Gia walked into the kitchen while the boys shifted in their spots.

"Let me take a wild guess. You're arguing about Deacon's boys," I said.

Elias and Nate glared at Deacon while he glowered back at his brothers.

"Okay. Settle down." I waved at the boys. "I don't need you three duking it out around the holidays."

"Funny story. Deacon isn't coming." Nate glared at Deacon even harder.

"Okay."

The boys' heads snapped to mine.

"So, Deacon isn't coming."

"It's because Decker refuses to celebrate the holidays with us," Elias said.

"And why is that?" I asked.

Deacon looked at me. "Decker thinks his uncles hate him and his brothers."

"And, of course, you agreed."

"No, but I don't want to lose my boys."

"Then you should have said something. Deacon, you can't let your boys play divide and conquer. It doesn't work."

"What am I supposed to do?"

"Let your boys fall and make mistakes. It's how they learn. If you keep protecting them, they won't learn."

"Elias and Nate said I should tell Dyson the truth."

"You're brothers are right. You should have told Dyson the truth."

Deacon furrowed his brows.

"Deacon, you can't cower to your children when situations get hard. Your boys can't throw ultimatums around. I didn't accept that behavior from you and your brothers. You shouldn't accept it from your boys."

"So, what should I do?"

"Christ. Will you grow a pair and stop questioning yourself?" Nate asked Deacon.

"Nathaniel!" I snapped.

"Oh, come on, Dad! Deacon mopes around like his life is over. How about if I beat the hell out of him?" Nate shot Deacon an annoyed look.

"Are you in your forties or two?" I asked Nate.

Nate rolled his eyes.

"Why don't I beat the hell out of both of you and call it a day?" Elias asked his brothers.

"Don't start your shit, Elias." I pointed at Elias.

"I could turn off my hearing aids so I don't have to listen to their bitching."
