Misinformed

I sat back on the couch with my arms crossed and listened to Gertie and Gabby.

"You could have told me," Gabby told Gertie.

"And then what?" Gertie asked.

"I could have met my dad before today. It would have been better than because I survived a car crash. Sorry, I survived, but others died. Oh, hey, I'm your daughter, by the way."

"Actually, Ben told you that you were his daughter," I said.

Gertie and Gabby looked at me in disbelief.

"If you'll tell a story, tell it right." I shrugged.

Gabby rolled her eyes before turning her attention back to Gertie. "I'm not mad. But I don't understand why no one told me."

"It's not something you don't tell a child." Gertie put her fists on her hips. "Children don't understand adoption."

I listened to Gertie speak, pulled out my phone, and texted someone. It seems Gertie is misinformed about what children understand. After texting the person for a few minutes, I slid my phone into my pocket and waited.

Gertie and Gabby argued. Did you ever watch two crazy people argue? It's interesting. Neither can make a point to save their lives.

A few minutes later, someone knocked. I answered the door while Gertie and Gabby argued and waved Casper and Hayes through. They entered the house. I closed the door, placed my thumb and finger between my lips, and whistled.  Gabby and Gertie stopped arguing and looked at us.

"This is my cousin Casper and his boyfriend, Hayes. My cousin Oliver and his husband Conner adopted Casper and his brother Jordin," I said.

Casper smirked.

I dragged Hayes to the couch. It's best to get out of the line of fire when Casper speaks. He reminded me of Rafe.

"So, my dipshit cousin told me you don't think children don't understand adoptions." Casper thumbed at me.

I rolled my eyes.

"Gabby was six when her parents died," Gertie said.

"My adoptive parents," Gabby interjected.

Gertie gave Gabby an unamused look.

"I was five when my dads talked to me about my adoption," Casper said.

Gertie and Gabby stared at Casper.

"It happens when you question why your brother has a different hair color." Casper shrugged.

Gertie sighed. "Greg planned to tell Gabby, but he didn't get a chance. The family had a falling out because Greg thought Ben would take Gabby back."

"No offense, but that doesn't happen."

"How can you be so sure?"

"I met my birth mother during my senior year in high school. I don't see her as my parent. Oliver and Conner are my parents. And I still don't call her mom."

Gertie's brows lifted in surprise.

"No judge in their right mind would give a kid back to people they don't know. If they do, they're verifiable idiots."

Hayes and I snickered.

Casper looked at Gabby. "Have you met your biological parents?"

"I met my biological dad today. He told me the story about my adoption," Gabby said, shooting Gertie a look.
