Ryan Robertson One Shot
This was out of his comfort zone, but he was doing it for me. Three years ago we had met outside of this coffee shop. I was enjoying my favorite cup of warm coffee when the office had called me for an emergency meeting. I remember quickly getting up and rushing outside. I had not seen the guys playing soccer outside until it was too late. He had been the one that kicked the ball in my direction and hit the cup out of my hands. He had, also, been the one that took me to the hospital with two degree burns from the coffee. Half of the time I spent it scolding him, but at the end of the day we exchanged numbers and now here we were.
"Darling, what are you thinking about?" his voice brought me back to reality. His voice always brought me back, because reality was always better than my imagination.
"Remember the time we met?"
"How could I forget? I tried to act cool, but I ended up paying a heavy hospital bill." He laughed.
"You had offered—"
"I don't regret it." He cut my sentence.
Ryan hated coffee shops; better yet he hated coffee. Yet here we were.
"Thank you for bringing me here." I smiled before taking a small sip of my coffee.
"I had to wait a little, so, the owner wouldn't recognize me anymore."
"Ryan!" I exclaimed.
"What? How could I face him, knowing that I was the kid who always broke his window?"
We both laughed, knowing that it was completely true. I always questioned who was the person that the owner would always complain about?
"What weird haired kid! He broke my window, again." I remembered his voice in the back of my mind.
"I still do not know why you would want to bring Danny here." He asked.
"I want him to be familiar with the wonderful smell of coffee!" I defended.
"Coffee isn't good for kids!" I interjected.
"I'm not saying I would feed him in his bottle, just liking the smell is enough for me." I smiled.
"Fine, but if he grows to be addicted you're paying for rehab." He joked.
We both looked to our side at our little Danny. His two front teeth showing as he laughed along with us. For the rest of the afternoon we spent reminiscing about our time together. We also made plans for our near future. I did not think that, that guy that gave me two degree burns could also give me another reason to live.
"Oh, you're so beautiful." His voice once again brought me to reality.
"Stop, you're gonna make me blush." I looked around the shop in hopes that no one was watching.
Danny giggled beside us.
"It's the truth. You are ever so gorgeous." He bit his lip.
"Ryan, please, stop." I asked once again.
"Fine, fine, but promise me one thing?" he took my hands in his.
"What is it, babe?"
"Promise me, you believe me." His words were genuine. Concern filled his face almost doubting what I was going to say.
"Of course, I will always believe you."
"Good." He smiled once again and kissed the knuckles of my hands.
"You and our baby are everything I need. I am so glad I caused you those burns." We once again busted out laughing, with Danny giggling beside us.
I would not trade this moment for the world. Here we were celebrating our three year anniversary, at my favorite coffee shop with my favorite people. I, too, thanked him for burning me that day.
