You walk a fine line between beautifully macabre and uncharacteristically psychotic.
Sri was sure her heart had just skipped several beats after the gunshot echoed through the tunnel. She wasn't sure what terrified her more—death itself or the horrifying possibility of dying at the hands of the man she loved. For a fleeting, nightmarish moment, time felt suspended, everything frozen as her heartbeat thundered in her ears. Then, she heard a heavy thud behind her.
Dazed, she whipped around, breath catching in her throat, only to see a body sprawled at her feet, a dark pool of blood seeping onto her shoes. She barely registered the man's lifeless eyes staring up at nothing, his face pale and rigid. Her whole body went cold.
"You killed him!" Her voice pitched higher than she intended.
Taehyung's response was as cold as ice, devoid of any warmth or compassion. "He'll live. Besides, it's not the first time." His words were a hard slap to her heart, each syllable hammering in the same indifference that had become a stranger to her.
"Taehyung, I—" She took a step toward him, her hands reaching, pleading, desperate, but he cut her off with a silent gesture, his face stony.
"I don't want to hear it." Without another word, he turned, his shoulders squared in cold rejection. He began walking away, leaving her standing there, stunned and alone.
"Tae, please, listen to me." She reached for him, every part of her begging him to just stop, to give her a chance to explain. "Just... just listen to me! Kim Taehyung!" Her voice cracked, pleading, raw with everything she'd tried so hard to bury.
He stopped abruptly, standing at the edge of the tunnel where a faint ray of sunlight touched just the edges of his dark hair. She could see the way his shoulders tensed, see the slight tremble in his hands as he clenched his fists, yet he didn't turn to face her. Her hand instinctively rose, hovering in the air, desperate to touch him, to reassure him. But it froze, and she let it fall back at her side.
"You fooled me again," he finally said, his voice trembling with bitterness. He turned, his eyes hollow, filled with a despair that pierced straight through her. "You all did. From the beginning, I was just a pawn to you gangsters." His gaze held such depthless pain that she nearly crumbled under it.
"Taehyung... please. I had my reasons," she whispered, her own voice breaking, even though she knew it sounded hollow.
"Damn your reasons!" he shouted, his voice raw and filled with the hurt he could no longer contain. "Last time, you had the same 'reasons' when you faked your death! Why is it so hard for you to trust me, to let me in? I'm your husband for fuck's sake!" His voice cracked, his pain palpable, each word tearing at her defenses.
"I know," she murmured, her voice barely a whisper. "That's why I did it. I didn't want anyone to hurt you."
"But you did, Sri. You hurt me more than any enemy ever could." His voice broke, his own eyes brimming with unshed tears. "You thought it was easier to erase me from your life than to let me in. When will you stop being so selfish and see that I'm here, standing by you?" His voice softened, but his eyes, filled with heartbreak, held her captive.
