"I can't breathe!

It's suffocating!"

The water was icy, its chill seeping deep into her bones. The more she struggled to swim out, the more her body seemed to sink, drawn into the current of the swift river. The cold water flooded her ears, and it clogged her nose, numbing all her senses. The world above the surface became blurrier with each passing second as her consciousness slipped further away. The river seemed determined to pull the last remnants of her life out of her.

Suddenly, she heard a faint calling of her name.

"Mommy..."

"Mommy!" Taesoo gasped sharply, her body jerking upright. Her eyes bulged in panic as her forehead broke into a cold sweat. Breathing became difficult for a few moments, her chest tightening as she fought to catch her breath. She was now stepping into her twenties. However, the same nightmare had been haunting her for years, and even after thirteen years, it still sent chills down her spine, wrapping her in a cold embrace.

Slowly, her mind began to clear as she registered her surroundings. The muffled sounds from the dream faded away, and the cold sweat on her body began to dry. She was in the college library. The soft lighting from the overhead lamps cast a warm glow over the rows of books. The library was empty now, the shelves of anatomy books surrounding her like silent witnesses. She realized she had been studying late into the night for her upcoming semester exams.

"Hey, Taesoo," a soft voice interrupted her thoughts. A gentle hand rested on her shoulder, and she looked up to find her Australian friend standing beside her. Her friend's face was filled with concern. "Are you okay? I saw you choking in your sleep."

Taesoo blinked a few times, taking in the concerned expression on her friend's face. The panic from the nightmare lingered in her chest, but she tried to calm herself.

"Yes... I'm fine," Taesoo exhaled shakily, trying to mask the unease. She looked at her friend, her eyes refocusing. "Your lab's over?" she asked, noticing her friend's white lab coat, the stethoscope hanging loosely around her neck. The girl had curly blonde hair and a sprinkle of freckles across her t-zone, giving her a youthful, bright look.

"Yeah," her friend replied, adjusting the stethoscope, her tone still laced with concern. "But you don't look fine. You sure you're alright?"

Taesoo managed a small smile and nodded. "I'm fine, really. Just... tired, I guess." The words felt hollow, but she didn't want to burden her friend with the memories that still haunted her.

Her friend eyed her for a moment, then softened. "Okay, but if you ever need someone to talk to—"

"I know, Jane. Thank you," Taesoo cut her off gently, not wanting to dive into the memories that had surfaced again. Jane gave a small nod, sensing that now was not the time.

Taesoo didn't remember much about that day. The memories were blurry, like a fog she couldn't quite clear. She had tried asking her parents, but their answers were vague and dismissive. They said someone had thrown her off the bridge, where she had nearly drowned, but her doctor father, had saved her just in time. That was all they ever told her.

But the explanation didn't satisfy her. It never had. It didn't explain why, sometimes, when she closed her eyes, she saw the water swirling in shades of crimson instead of the usual dirty blue. It didn't explain the strange, unsettling feeling she had whenever the memory resurfaced—the feeling that something had been hidden from her.
