I met my mate. I never thought I'd be blessed with a mate nor did I entertain the topic of having one, yet she tumbled into my life; literally. That night I went to pick up Jessabelle from the pub. Her mate, my younger brother was out looking for her estranged parents that were dead set on killing her and I promised to keep her safe.
When I got there, a strong scent assaulted my nose. It was a sweet scent that is so hard to describe that trying wouldn't do it any justice. I opened the door of the pub, just a crack, and my breath was taken away from me almost instantly.
A small dark-skinned girl was sitting by the bar's counter. Her hair was brushed up in a coily ponytail and she was wearing a male's oversized shirt with jeans. And she was barefooted.
Jessabelle went to her and tried to coax her to go home but the girl cried and told her to leave her alone. A small twinge pulled in my chest at the sight. She was clearly a wolf and it took a lot to get us even slightly tipsy but this girl was most definitely drunk. She was so young, I couldn't fathom what or who would drive her to this.
She got up from the stool after pushing Jessabelle away and stumbled to the door. Instinctively, I rushed through the door and caught her just as she tripped over her feet. Sparks rushed through my body the moment she crashed into me. I couldn't deny the facts in front of me. She is my other half. Jessabelle helped me carry her back to her pack and when we came home she told me the entire story.
The girl had been coming to the pub since the weekend after the Lunar Moon. Like every pack, they had their Mating Dance and it was at this dance, she found out that her mate was her boyfriend of 3 years. However, he had a choice between her and her best friend as he felt the pull with them both. He rejected her and chose her best friend.
I tried to remain indifferent to the news but it was mostly impossible. I couldn't understand why the two most important people in her life would betray her in such a way. It angered me to think about all the pain she must be experiencing. It's been a whole month since then. I'd decided to give her the time she needed to grieve the loss of the bond. I didn't completely expel the possibility of her first mate changing his mind either.
"Alaric!"
A dread-filled voice bounced around the cabin halls as a sweet scent wafted through the air toward me. That girl, she's here. I got off my bed and speed walked out of the bedroom. I locked eyes with Jessabelle's fear-filled ones before my vision trailed to the floor. I blinked rapidly at my unconscious mate before I noticed that her chest wasn't moving.
I trudged over to the two girls and stooped down, not for a second taking my eyes off my mate. What the hell happened? I scooped her up in my arms and mind-linked the nearest doctor while taking her to the nearest room. It happened to be mine.
Dr. Hardy arrived in no time and started examining my mate while I stood in the corner. She was an efficient doctor so I had no need to worry.
"She's dying of rejection," she sighed sadly, her eyes meeting mine, "It seems that her mate has marked another."
