Sunjai smacked her lips, "Infiniti, why you always got some to say?"
Her best friend laughed, "I'm just looking out for you." She grabbed a bottle of water and handed it to Sunjai. "How much longer you got?"
"I think Kofi wants me on the floor one more time after that big boned bitch. Then we can head out." She screwed the cap off her water and took a long sip, Kofi was the man who managed the club and all its dancers.
Infiniti laughed, "Why you ain't ever nice to them girls?"
"T, you know them bitches don't like me." She complained, setting the water down.
"That don't mean you should call them names. You still work wit' 'em." She tried to reason as Kofi walked up behind Sunjai.
Sunjai shrugged, "I really don't care."
It had been two months since the girls made their move to Memphis. Back in New York, they both stripped for extra money whenever they needed it but once they moved here Infiniti no longer wanted to dance, she wanted to promote her nail business. But in the meantime she settled for bartending as she tried to build her brand.
On the other hand, Sunjai owned her own online boutique. It had good days and bad days but the pay wasn't consistent enough yet to quit dancing. So there they were, standing in Purple Diamond as employees.
"Maui," Kofi sat down in the barstool next to Sunjai. She turned to face him, "How would you feel about doing a private dance with Bambi instead of going back to the pole tonight?"
Sunjai thought about it for a second before just nodding, "I'll do it. How much is he paying?"
"5 upfront and of course you get to split whatever is on the floor with Bambi" He explained, pulling a band of cash from his shirt pocket.
She reached out and took the money, "I'll be there in ten minutes." She made her way to the locker room first so she could change and reapply her perfume and lipgloss.
When she got into the locker room the other dancer, Bambi was strapping up her heels. "Are you ready?"
"Didn't you see me just walk in here? Do I look ready?" Sunjai walked past her and went to her locker, putting the combination in before taking the lock off. "Sit down for a second, I'm not rushing."
She huffed loudly, watching as Sunjai began to change her shoes, she watched as Sunjai purposefully moved slow. "You playin' with my money, Maui."
Sunjai pulled the cap off her perfume and sprayed her body a few times before looking at Bambi, "Here, you need some of this."
Bambi just stared at her, "You think you so funny."
Sunjai put the perfume back in her locker and after putting on more lipgloss, she closed and locked the locker. "Aight, I'm ready."
Bambi turned and made her way out of the room, headed to the private rooms. They walked in side by side, Sunjai took a moment to survey the room as she rubbed her glossed lips together. It didn't take her long to realize whoever was paying for the dance was rich, the expensive bottles and stacks of money on the table was evidence of that.
Sunjai had been stripping for three years now, she had never come across a room with so much money just out in the open like that. Bambi was quick to go in and find a lap to sit in, the dim lighting making it hard for facial features to be seen, not that it mattered to Sunjai, her eyes were stuck to the money.
She then realized if she wanted the money she should probably stop standing there and act like she knew how to work. She closed the door and walked further into the room, "You good?" She heard one of the men ask her.
"She's fine," Bambi answered lowering herself into his lap, her hands going to his shoulder length locs. "What did you say your name was?" She asked, trying to catch his eye but he was looking over her shoulder.
"Wait, can we switch?" He asked before Sunjai could even walk over to his friend that was on another couch a couple feet away.
Sunjai glanced in his direction before smiling as Bambi rolled her eyes, she didn't argue though, she got up and switched places with Sunjai. She stood in front of the man with locs and once she was there she recognized who it was, she could only smile. She was glad she accepted the offer to come int this room tonight.
"You just gon' stand there?" Ja asked, looking up at her.
She put her hands on her hips, "Whatchu want me to do?" Her eyes fell to the stack of money that was sitting next to him.
"Damn, I gotta ask a dancer to dance for me?" He teased, he leaned forward and put his elbows on his knees.
Sunjai took a two steps back before spinning, turning to face the pole in the room. Bambi watched as the three men in the room all turned their attention to her as she put a hand on the pole and pulled herself up on it, her legs wrapping around the cool metal and that's when Bambi looked away. But no one else did, it was like this almost every time they worked a room together, eyes were on her.
Bambi pushed herself off the couch and walked over to the bar that was in the room, she didn't even want a drink she just wanted to get away from them. Five minutes later Sunjai's feet touched the floor again and before anyone else could speak, Ja did, "C'mera."
Although the palms of her hands were burning, her arms were sore and she was still trying to find her balance - she made her way over to the basketball player. His hands went to her waist as she straddled him, if she wasn't grinding in his lap to the rhythm of the music, he wouldn't have even known the music had slowed down. He couldn't focus on anything but her.
"What's your name?" He asked as she pressed her hands to his shoulders gently, his hand finally reached over and grabbed his money, his friends had already thrown all of theirs but he was waiting. Now that they were out of cash and Sunjai was paying them no attention, they were by the bar talking to Bambi.
"Maui," Sunjai watched as the point guard took the rubber band off his bills.
He licked his lips, "Your real name,"
"Maui," She repeated with a smile as her left hand slid off his shoulder, running down his chest then to his stomach, it stopped when she felt the piece of metal sitting in his waistband.
"Yeah, aight."
£ £ £
Sunjai ripped open her fifth trash bag and let the money fall on Infiniti who was sitting on the carpet, trying to count what was in the other four bags. "Stop tryna count it, it's 30 bands."
Infiniti looked up at her best friend, "30? Are you sure?"
"Bitch, he tore thirty rubber bands. I'm 100% sure." She scooped of the cash up in her arms before throwing it up, letting it rain all over the both of them.
Infiniti laughed, "Girl.."
Sunjai smiled widely before just screaming, kicking some of the money around as happy screams bounced of their beige painted walls. "We rich," She then said confidently while walking away, a smile still on her lips.
