The Backstory:

---

After everything was packed and settled, my parents and I moved out to a new town. We left behind the house I grew up in—for reasons I was never told.

"You're too young to understand, sweetheart," Mom would say every time I asked.
Eventually, I stopped asking.

Once we finished unpacking, Mom and I decided to walk around town to get familiar with the place and maybe meet some neighbors. Dad couldn’t come with us since he had work.

Mom held a small tray of homemade cupcakes as we approached the first house next to ours. She let out a soft breath, clearly a little nervous, before knocking on the door.

It opened, revealing a woman who looked around the same age as my mom. She had kind eyes and a warm smile.

“Hello! We’re your new neighbors,” Mom said with a shy clasp of her hands.

The woman smiled back and extended her hand. “Nice to meet you. I’m Mrs. Qm. I’m sorry we didn’t welcome you sooner—things have just been a little busy around here.”

Mom shook her hand, returning the smile. While they spoke, I glanced around and noticed a boy about my age playing in the yard next door. He was tossing a soccer ball up in the air and catching it casually, clearly lost in his own world.

But then… his eyes met mine.

He froze.

I froze.

We stared at each other for a moment that felt way too long. I took a small step back, bumping into my mom, who was still mid-conversation with Mrs. Qm. I looked at the boy again—he was walking toward us now.

Wait, what is he doing?

“Oh, Alex! Come here!” Mrs. Qm called out to him. “We have new neighbors!”

Alex—so that was his name—slowed down and stepped behind his mother, peeking out shyly.

“Is this your son? Hello!” my mom greeted, bending slightly to his level. “Don’t be shy, sweetheart.”

Mrs. Qm chuckled. “He’s just a little quiet around new people. Alexis, say hi.”

“Hola, señora,” he said softly.

My mom blinked in confusion. “What did he say?”

“He just said hello,” Mrs. Qm explained with a smile. “His name’s Alexis, but we call him Alex for short.”

“Oh! Hello, Alex! This is my daughter, Y/N!” Mom beamed. “Go on, Y/N, say hi.”

I looked at him and smiled nervously. To my surprise, he smiled back, this wide, silly grin that instantly made me feel at ease.

'I think he’ll be a good friend,' I thought.

Without warning, he reached for my hand and tugged me gently toward his yard.

“Ah—Alex!” Mrs. Qm gasped. “Be gentle, sweetie!”

“Y/N!” my mom called, amused but a little surprised.

I let him pull me along. He stopped in front of a small, neat garden with colorful flowers blooming in the corner.

“Look!” he said proudly.

“Wow, these flowers are beautiful!” I said, crouching down to get a better look.

“No, not the flowers!” he said, giggling. “Look closely—in the grass.”

I leaned in and scanned the area until something caught my eye—a tiny, hidden duck statue tucked beneath the flowers.

“Ohhh!” I laughed. “That’s so cute!”

He grinned wider. “Right?! It’s been there forever.”

Then, suddenly—

“Boo!” he shouted, placing his hand on my shoulder.

I jumped slightly, startled, and he burst out laughing.

“You’re so easy to scare!” he said between laughs.

I stuck out my tongue at him playfully. “You're so weird.”

“Anyways,” he said dramatically, sitting beside me on the grass. “Let’s start over. I’m Alexis, but you can call me Alex.”

I smiled and held out my hand. “I’m Y/N, but you can call me N/N!”

He shook it, then gave me a nod like we’d just made the most important agreement of our lives.

Back at the porch, our moms watched us, smiling.

“They’re getting along so well already,” my mom said.

“They’re cute together,” Mrs. Qm agreed. “I think they’ll be good friends.”

And from that moment, I think we both knew—

Something started that day.
