Right now, you felt uncomfortable in your seat since Alex was sitting beside you—thanks to Dave. The two of you were the only ones in the room, watching a football game, waiting for George and Dave to return. The room was dimly lit, the quiet hum of the TV filling the silence between you and the boy who once meant everything.

Flashback

You, Dave, and Alex had been laughing together earlier until George and Alex came back into the room, holding plates stacked with midnight snacks.

They placed the plates on the table, and as George glanced at Dave, you raised an eyebrow in confusion. Dave pinched your shoulder. You gave him a questioning look, and when you followed his gaze, it landed on Alex—who was giggling over something George had said.

Then Alex looked at you.

You quickly turned away, pretending to focus on the snack in front of you.

“Uh, guys, I’ll go to the restroom,” Dave suddenly said, interrupting the quiet buzz in the room.

You turned to him, brows furrowing. He smirked knowingly at you before leaving.

George clapped his hands, looking at Alex with a cheeky grin. “Okay, everything’s done. And you, Quackity—find a seat.”

To your surprise, Alex sat down right next to you.

“You two wait here. I forgot something—I'll be right back,” George added casually, then walked off before you could protest.

End of flashback

Now, sitting alone beside Alex, your heart pounded in your chest. You tried to calm yourself by focusing on the football game playing on screen, but nothing worked. You glanced at him quickly—his gaze was locked on the TV.

‘Am I the only one nervous?’ you wondered. ‘Maybe he doesn’t even remember me…’

You picked up a piece of snack and slowly bit into it, trying to ease your nerves.

Moments later, you reached for another, but before you could, Alex gently nudged the plate toward you. You looked at him, and he gave a small nod, gesturing for you to take one. You smiled faintly and did.

Then you both stared back at the screen.

“It’s been a while… Do you still remember me?” he suddenly asked, his voice soft but steady.

Your eyes widened. You turned to him. “You know me?”

Alex rested his arm along the top of the sofa, his eyes never leaving yours. “I still recognize you by the mole next to your nose,” he said with a gentle smile. “I've waited a long time for you to come back.”

Your breath caught in your throat.

“I kept my feelings to myself, just hoping I’d get to talk to you again,” he continued. “You left… without hearing what I was going to say that day.”

He stood up, adjusted his beanie, then placed his hands in his pockets. You watched him, stunned.

“What did you mean?” you finally managed to say.

He chuckled lightly, almost nervously. “I was going to say... I like you. I love you. I don’t even know if those feelings are the same after all this time, but back then… they were real. And even now, they haven’t disappeared completely.”

Your eyes blinked rapidly, heart racing. Without a word, you stood up and walked away.

Just as you stepped outside, George and Dave entered the living room.

“Hey—what’s happening? Y/N?” George called after you.

Outside, you stopped just in front of the gate, trying to catch your breath. That’s when someone gently grabbed your arm—it was Alex.

“Hey… why did you suddenly leave?” he asked, brows furrowed with concern.

“I… I’m sorry,” you said quietly.

“Hey,” he said gently, “Don’t say sorry to me. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

Y/N's POV

“My father died…” I whispered.

I saw his expression drop. He didn’t look surprised—he looked… heartbroken.

“I know what happened,” he said softly.

“You know? How?”

“My mom… she found out. Your mom told her.”

“She did?” I breathed out. “Gosh…”

Alex nodded, stepping a little closer. “I made a promise to your father. A real one.”

I looked at him, my eyes starting to burn.

“I promised I’d take care of you. And when you disappeared, I… I broke that promise without meaning to.”

His hands rested on my shoulders, grounding me.

“I’ll keep that promise now, Y/N. I’ll take care of you. I’ll protect you. I won’t let anyone hurt you—not again.”

I couldn’t hold it in anymore. My tears fell, hot and fast. And then, he pulled me into his arms.

“I love you too, Alex,” I whispered against his chest. “All these years, I still love you.”

3rd Person POV

From the window, Dave’s eyes widened as he watched the scene unfold outside. His jaw dropped, and he turned to George, ready to yell.

“Oh no! Are they confessing to each other? Are they actually—?”

Before he could finish, George quickly slapped a hand over Dave’s mouth. “Shhh! Don’t ruin the moment, man!”

Dave mumbled something incoherent, then just stood still, watching.

Outside, Alex and Y/N remained in each other's arms, the sky above beginning to lighten with the early signs of dawn. The world had shifted quietly around them—one heart to another, a story once interrupted by tragedy finally finding its way back.
