Merida woke up to find herself in her bedroom. She sat up slowly and looked around and saw a plate of food on her nightstand and a card and a flower. No one was in her room, it seemed too quite. All of a sudden there was a loud crash in her closet and Hamish, Hubert, and Harris burst out in a bundle of clothes and shoes.
"Boys, what are you doing here?" Merida asked gently. Her brothers gasped and jumped on the bed and ran towards her to give her a hug.
"What's all this about? Is everything okay?" she asked a wee bit worried. The boys drew back and she saw that they had tears in their eyes.
"Merida, oh thank goodness you're okay, we thought you were dead!" explained Hamish as he wiped his nose on his sleeve.
"Dead, what do you mean by dead?" said Merida confused.
"You've been asleep for two days." They said in unison.
"If you hadn't pushed mum out of the way, she probably would have been killed by that green lightning!" exclaimed Harris.
Before the boys could say anything else, Merida felt an excruciating pain in her gut and she gasped painfully. She placed a hand on her stomach and groaned, she laid her head back down on her pillow. Hubert came and calmly sat down next to her and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"Go get mum and dad, quick! They'll know what to do." He said to his brothers, they nodded in return and raced out of the room. Another wave of pain came over Merida and she rolled to her side.
"Hubert, what's happening to me?" groaned Merida; she started to feel a tingle go through her arms and legs, like numbness was passing through her whole body.
"It's probably because of the lightning." assumed Hubert; fear was starting to creep into his voice.
By now Merida couldn't feel anything, so she sat up and looked at Hubert, who was smiling awkwardly at her and then gasped as he looked at her hands. Merida looked down and gasped in horror. Her fingers had a thin layer of skin in between them, Merida couldn't believe her eyes, she had webbed fingers and they were a wee bit slimy too.
"This isn't good, is it?" asked Hubert
"No, this isn't good! You'd think I'm turning into the Lockness monster!" exclaimed Merida. She tried to get up from her bed, but something snagged and she fell over the side and some sheets came with her.
"Hey Merida, is your bed supposed to be this wet?" Hubert asked suspiciously. He was standing in the middle of her bed on a puddle of water.
"No it's not supposed to be wet at all . . . .," she stopped talking and she shrieked terrified as well as surprised as she saw some of the sheets reveal her legs the only probable was, was that they weren't legs, it was a deep blue fin. Hubert looked over the side of the bed and put his hand over his mouth in surprise.
"Hubert, we need to hide this from mum and dad before they come in. Go get me my ridin' dress it'll be long enough to hide it." Said Merida anxiously as Hubert sped to her closet. It took him a minute or two to find the dress and bring it to her. Merida changed in to it as quickly as she could. She heard heavy and quick footsteps coming towards the door, at the last second she got her tail underneath the dress as the door swung open. Elinor rushed in, followed closely by Fergus, Hamish, and Harris. Hubert ran to his brothers and whispered something into their ears. They stared at Merida, then nodded their heads to her to say her secrete was safe with them and Merida sighed in relief.
"Oh Merida I thought I lost you, don't ever do that again, do you hear!" exclaimed Elinor as she sat down next to her daughter and hugged her.
"No need to be thinkin' about that so soon, mum. I'm fine." she assured her mother, but careful not to show her hands.
"Aye, and it's a good thing were not." Laughed Fergus as he scooped up his wife and daughter into his arms in a loving hug and sways from side to side. This caused Merida's tail to poke out of her dress, but as he placed them down and since Merida has no legs she falls backwards and catches herself with her elbows, but her dress falls to the side and reveals her deep blue tail, she looks up to see her parents wide eyed in horror.
