Jim Halpert has lived his entire life in the vampire colony in the woods. He knows he's different from humans, but he's never questioned it before. The vampires in his colony live in a tight-knit community, always on the move. Jim was born into it, raised by his vampire mother and the other members of the colony. They lived like a family unit, with a central leader and social classes. The adults would feed him blood, and as a child, he never questioned where it came from. It was just a part of his life, like breathing or sleeping.

But as he grows older, Jim begins to ask questions. He wants to know where the blood comes from and how the adults obtain it. He hears rumors that they kill people to get it, and he can't bear the thought of being a part of that. When he asks the other members of the colony, no one gives him a straight answer. They brush him off or tell him it's none of his business. Jim can't accept that. He wants to know the truth.

As Jim continues to press for answers, he's shunned by the other vampires in the colony. They don't like his curiosity, and they don't want to talk about their darker practices around a child. Jim's mother is the only one who stands by him.

One day, Jim overhears some of the older vampires talking about hunting humans. They're laughing and boasting about the kill they made the night before. Jim is horrified. He doesn't want to be a part of a community that kills humans for their blood.

Jim's mother can sense something is bothering him, so she sits him down and tells him everything. She explains that the colony does sometimes kill humans to obtain blood, but only when they have no other choice. She tells him about the dangers of living in the woods, about how they have to protect themselves to survive. Jim is horrified, he doesn't understand. He doesn't want to be a part of it.

After that conversation, Jim stops drinking blood. He can't bear the thought of contributing to the death of innocent humans. The other vampires in the colony don't agree, and they continue to shun him. But Jim doesn't care. He has his mother's love and support, and that's enough for him.

As Jim continues to grow, he becomes more and more disillusioned with the colony. He sees the way they treat each other, the way they hold on to their traditions and hierarchy. He doesn't fit in, and he doesn't want to. He longs for something more, something different.

When Jim turns twelve, he begins to wonder about the outside world. He's never been outside the woods, and he doesn't know anything about the humans who hunt his kind. He longs to explore, but he knows that it's too dangerous.

But one day, as the colony passes through a town, Jim can't resist the temptation to sneak away and explore. He follows the sounds of people and cars until he stumbles upon a large building surrounded by a fence. It's a school, and Jim has never seen anything like it before.

He's struck by the sights and sounds of the schoolyard. Children are running and playing, their laughter filling the air. Jim has never seen anything like it before. He watches from the bushes as the children play outside, his heart racing with excitement and fear.

He finds himself drawn to a boy who stands apart from the other children, lining up sticks in a perfect line. The boy's expression is serious, and he seems lost in his own thoughts. He's fair-skinned, with brown hair and bright blue eyes. Jim watches him for a long time, feeling a connection to him that he can't explain. He wants to go over and talk to him, to join in his game, but he's scared. He knows what humans do to vampires like him.

Jim continues to watch from the bushes, mesmerized by the boy's actions. After a few moments, the boy looks up and makes eye contact with Jim. Jim freezes, unsure of what to do. The boy doesn't look scared, though. He just stares at Jim for a few moments before walking over to where he's hiding.
