10 mins had passed. You dozed off for a moment, but it was as if your body sensed you were close to home. You sat up from the window to get a better look outside, and you saw your apartment complex sign. You pulled the string to alert the driver to stop, in which she did.
You sat up and looked over to Sevika. Her eyes were almost closed, barely holding on. But her gaze was on you before you could even look at her.
You began to feel very bad keeping her up this late. "Sevika.. you can go home. Thank you for getting me this far. I'm not gonna make you walk me to my apartment."
Sevika stretched. Instead of acknowledging my words or my presence, she stood up and walked in front of me and out of the bus. Of course, not without giving the driver a wink.
You rolled your eyes, again, knowing she couldn't see, and then made your way off the bus. Sevika stood there, waiting for you to lead the way. You gave up the waiting game and decided to just get home.
You could see your fairy lights that hung around your tiny balcony, and your cute little fake pants that were hit by the light.
You moved into this apartment about a year ago. It definitely wasn't your first choice. Nor the second or the third. It was honestly your last resort, and the appearance of it explained a lot. The neighborhood was shady. Extremely shady. The ambulance and police loved this area because of the constant issues that appear. If it's not that crazy couple beating each other, it's the kidnapping, gang related fights, sexual assaults, untrained dogs, parties that always end up bad and annoy the hell out of the rest of the neighborhood, and on top of that, the major drug consumption and selling in this area alone is high. You don't know much about drugs, but you do know there is something on the market that have been driving people mad. Giving you more of a reason to not even look into it.
Despite it being unappealing in many cases, your apartment is still a little bit nicer. It's couple hundred dollars more, but still cheap enough for you to pay, and the only place that really accepted someone with an unstable income. You wouldn't dare ask your mother to sign the lease for you. She doesn't even know where you live. You would rather keep it that way until you could afford a nicer, SAFER area to live in.
But at last, you figured a way to make it homey. You usually came home before it was dark, but if you had to, you would take a tunnel from a block down where the nicer apartments were that led to your specific apartment. Nobody really knew about it which made it safer. Then you'd quickly make your way up one flight of stairs and then boom. Safe and sound.
You would then do your routine of securing every and any point of entry. They were always secured, but you always checked. You added 2 more locks to the front door and a camera that you hid on the door. You would watch it to make sure before you entered or exit, and if you were paranoid or if something loud was going on. You also slid your couch there.
Luckily, you don't have any windows besides the balcony and a tiny one in your room that you covered with a tall, skinny book case you found outside of someone's house next to their trash. The balcony, even though decorated, had another set of locks on it, but it being breakable, resorted to you placing 2 heavy slabs of wood in front of it to cover the doors, and a tv stand against it that held knickknacks and plants and crystals.
Your house was oddly set up. You have 2 thrifted couches, one you rarely use that blocks the door, and the love seat that you do use. You don't have a tv, you mainly used your laptop or a projector. So you kept the wall facing the couch blank. You had a small kitchen and tiny bathroom that just fit a tub big enough for you luckily. Your bedroom mainly fit your bed and dresser. The overall apartment was small, but you didn't need a lot of space. Just enough to function and work on tattoo designs or college.
You were admitted in a top side college with a full scholarship. You accepted it, your mother practically accepted for you, but you decided to do it online. Your mother was not fond, but you could've declined the whole thing.. so it was settled.
But back to the apartment you and Sevika were headed towards, it was still cozy and warm. It was safe inside. You could stay in there. You much preferred it than having to go and face the scary world.
Sometimes you think that life could be easier. It could be. You could've just went to college and have a dorm all paid for because of your scholarship. You could still change your mind. But it wouldn't make sense at that point. You have 1.5 years left, and you're getting closer to your tattoo career.
Besides, anything was better than being with your mother. Under her control. That was probably your main motivation. To not only keep away from her grasp, but to show her that you could do this. Prove her wrong. Show her what her daughter is capable of. In her own way.
Smoke filled your nostrils once again making you swat it away. You looked over Sevika smoking her abnormally large cigar.
"I can tell you're thinking hard, I hope you know where you live. You sure you don't live down the block with those topside wannabe-ers."
You snorted. "I know where I live, I just have a lot on my mind. If I was a topside wannabe-er, I wouldn't be in your tattoo parlor. Here we are." You landed in front of your building. You quickly made your way up the stairs with your keys in hand.
"Thank you for taking me home. I appreciate it. And I'm sorry about snapping at you earlier." You gave her a small, sincere smile.
She smeared her cigar on the brick wall before littering. "It's not that big of a deal, I live right above you." She then walked off.
"What?!" You gasped. Not knowing if this was bad or something else that you're not sure how to feel about.
You saw her walk upstairs with a smirk before disappearing above you. You heard her unlock her door above you. You in turn closed your door and locked it on the outside following your procedure of securing the whole house. You heard heavy footsteps that weren't present since you lived here, but you did see a moving truck yesterday. You didn't hear heavy steps, but then again, you were barely home and when you came home, you passed out.
You decided that you wouldn't press on it any longer, and quickly took yourself to bed.
