Emma was very intrigued by this new job.
For the first time ever, the Lieutenant didn't give her any file with information about her detail or any more information besides an address and an hour.
It was ridiculous but apparently, all of it was a request of the man she was going to protect.
Emma had a feeling that this was somewhat related to the fact of him being an athlete, even if she still had no clue in what sport, she just hoped it wasn't football.
She had her flight to Canada booked and most of the things organized to go but zero information about the guy.
It bothered her, and not just a tiny bit.
This girl liked to know what she was getting herself into and the whole thing mostly meant that she was being kept in the dark.
Emma packed light, knowing she could just buy things as she needed, and settled with two bags, a small cabin one and another one slightly bigger. It was winter so she expected to need warmer clothes.
Commercial flights didn't bother her at all, not after years of military planes that didn't have half of the perks or comfort.
She arrived in Toronto after a couple of hours of travel and immediately checked the distance to the address she had. There was no reason to try to check into a hotel when she was meeting her new client in a couple of hours.
Finding a coffee shop, the girl decided to kill some time before going to the arranged place.
Emma had passed by the house and quickly done all of the recognition that her brain immediately set as a task. The condo seemed peaceful enough and not dangerous as expected. Canada was usually very safe in comparison with the States.
If this guy lived in Canada most of the time, she didn't quite understand why
he needed her, but the one thing that mattered was that she was getting paid.Eventually, it was near the time and she just figured that arriving slightly earlier was always better.
Emma rang the bell and patiently waited. To be fair, she had a lot of expectations of this guy, mostly because no one had given her anything and she was very curious.
She didn't expect the door to be opened by an Asian male that looked younger than her. Why did this guy even need protection?
"Hello. Are you Emma?" He asked with a heavy accent that she recognized as Japanese.
The girl nodded in answer.
"Yes, Sir. I will be doing your security detail."
"Sir?" The man laughed and she could only roll her eyes.
This was not going to be fun...
"I don't know what else to call you."
"Yuzuru should be fine.
"Is that your name?"
"Yes. I'm sorry, I didn't even introduce myself. My name is Yuzuru Hanyu."
Emma merely nodded, at least now she could start her investigation on the guy.
"Tell me how this is going to be because no one gave me details."
"Oh... They didn't?"
"I didn't even know your name. It doesn't happen usually."
"My team was probably being careful."
"I was told you're an athlete."
"Yeah. Figure skating."
The girl really tried to avoid her natural reaction but it turns out that her poker face needed some work, the last thing she expected was her new detail to be a skater.
"You follow?"
"No"
It was true, she hadn't seen or heard about figure skating in the last 10 years so it was not as if it was a lie, even if she knew a lot about the sport itself.
Out of every single sport in the world, this guy had to be a figure skater, imagine her luck.
"I just figured... Your reaction..."
Of course, her brain went into panic mode and she had to find a reasonable excuse to react so expressively.
"I'm just trying to understand how a small guy like you lifts a woman."
Smooth... Very smooth, Emma
"Huh... I don't."
"No?? Isn't that what figure skating is all about?"
Acting stupid always seemed to work for her, even if it made her cringe inside.
"The pairs. I do singles."
"Ah... Sorry, I'm illiterate on this."
"It's fine... You will figure it out soon enough."
"Soon?"
"Yes. I have to go to the rink in an hour, seems like a good time for you to start your job. Unless you didn't want to start today?"
Was he actually asking if she wanted to work? This guy was weird.
"You're the one paying me, so it's your call."
"But you may be tired from the trip"
Why did he even care? This guy was giving Mother Theresa a run for her money.
"I'm fine."
"I'll show you your bedroom then and you can unpack before we go."
That was the one thing she knew, that she would be staying at the house. It was fairly common in her line of work since it allowed for the bodyguard to always be near the detail.
Emma found herself quickly mapping out the house, every entry, every window. This was one of the inherent parts of serving for so long, you see danger everywhere, even in a peaceful neighborhood.
"There's something else." Yuzuru started.
"Yes?"
"Huh... I will need you to pretend you're my assistant?"
"Assistant?"
"Yes. My fellow colleagues shouldn't know about the bodyguard thing"
"Do your assistants usually carry guns?" She joked
"Wait... You have a gun?"
Emma looked at him like he had two heads but quickly retrieved the handgun on her waist to show him.
"This is my Glock 23', has been serving me well in the past years, never had problems with it."
To be honest, the girl loved the scared look on his face and didn't waste time before pulling her backup weapon from the strap on her ankle.
"Another one?"
"My backup, Sig Sauer P365. Fits everywhere, quite handy."
"Why do you have guns?"
His high-pitched, scared voice was actually adorable. Poor guy must have been quite sheltered if he's this surprised about a bodyguard carrying guns.
"You do know what my job is?"
"Yes... But..."
"Listen, Mr. Hanyu, you worry about your skating, I worry about your protection."
"Are those legal?"
"Yes... You want to see the papers?"
"No. No... It's fine."
Emma had to admit that if he was going to react like this to every single thing then they were certainly in for a ride.
She had a feeling this guy would be fun to tease.
