Lucy waved to me as she pulled out of the driveway. She wanted to be gone by the time Isaac got there, so I sat alone in the house, wondering what to do. I decided to read some of my math book, since final exams are coming up.
'12x.56=5y>7.89x...' A knock came to the door. I sighed and set the book back in my bag, expecting to find Isaac at the door.
Instead, I was met with Bennett's step dad. He smiled warmly at me.
"Hello Sarah."
"Oh, hi. I was expecting someone else."
"A date, huh?" He asked, smirking and looking over me. I nodded and looked down.
"Yeah. Is there something you want?" He smiled and nodded.
"Yes, I wanted to know if you had any shovels in your garage? I can't seem to find mine." I nodded and stepped aside.
"Yeah, I think so. Follow me," he walked in behind me and I led him into the garage, where I found our shovel.
"Here, just bring it back whenever." I said, handing it to him. He nodded and smiled at me again.
"Thank you, Sarah. Your such a good girl." The words 'Good girl' made me squirm, but not visibly. I just smiled.
"Thanks, I guess." He laughed and started out the door.
"Well, see you around." He walked out the door to his house. I sighed in relief that he hadn't stayed any longer. His presence was beginning to make me feel squeamish.
Isaac pulled in the driveway, honking to make sure I knew he was there. I did a few finishing touches on my self and walked out to the car. He smiled as I sat in the car.
"You look amazing."
"Thanks," I blushed, buckling up. He started the engine and we started off. I smirked,
"Where are we going?" He smiled.
"A restaurant."
"Which one?" He smiled and shook his head.
"Not telling."
"Why not?!" I pouted. He shook his head again. I smiled widely.
"So that's the game you wanna play?" We kept driving.
"Are we there yet?"
"No."
"Are we there yet?"
"Nope."
"Are we there yet?"
"No."
"Are we there-"
"Yep!" He laughed, finally pulling up to the place. When we parked, I was surprised to be there.
We were at the newest restaurant in town. It's name was simple, 'Italian.' I had been waiting months to eat here. He smiled,
"You look like you just found a unicorn."
"Isaac...this is awesome!" I exclaimed. He laughed and walked next to me. He wore a black button up shirt with grey dress pants. His hair was neat and he looked nice. He offered me his arm. I smiled and wrapped my right arm under and over his left, leaning my head on his shoulder.
We walked in together to the front counter. A woman in uniform and glasses smiled at us.
"Hello, how can I assist you?" Her accent was extremely thick. Isaac smiled,
"Newman reservation?" She looked down at her book and nodded.
"This way please," she gestured us to follow her. She led us into a giant ballroom with a huge Crystal chandelier in the middle. All the tables had white cloths draped over them, roses adorned each one. At the far end of the room were giant windows coated with frost from the snowy night. The stars were already out. A pianist played next to a marble dance floor. I gasped as we sat at our table that sat just in front of the dance floor, in the middle of everything. She gave us two menus and walked away. Isaac smiled as he watched my eyes getting bigger by the second.
"Are you going to order?"
"How did you afford this?" I heard myself ask. He laughed and shook his head.
"Doesnt matter. Do you like it?" I looked at him and nodded quickly.
"Yes, I love it." He nodded and we looked through the menu. I decided on chicken Alfredo while he wanted lasagna. After we ordered, I sighed and decided to start conversation.
"So, would you ever want to go to Italy?" He bit his lip.
"Hmm, no. I'd be too scared."
"Scared of what?!" I asked, giggling. He sighed.
"I don't like old Italian men." I held back my laughs, but wasnt doing a good job. He kicked me under the table.
"Shut up, it was a bad experience, ok?"
"I'm sorry, that's just funny." I giggled some more. He rolled his eyes.
"Everyone is afraid of something, ok?"
"But old Italian men?" I giggled uncontrollably. He sighed.
"What are you afraid of?" This made me stop. I blushed and shook my head.
"I'm not telling." He smiled and crossed his arms.
"Cmon, tell me!" I looked down at my hands. After a minute, I sighed.
"Ed sheeran." His eyes widened and he laughed out loud, earning a couple glares from the people there. I blushed even more.
"What?! And my fears ridiculous?!"
"What!? Don't judge me." I pouted.
"Why is he scary?" He asked, calming down a little. I sighed,
"It's not his personality or his music. He just...He looks like my uncle crossed with a tattooed biker, ok?" He burst out laughing for a few more minutes. They came with our food, setting it on the table. I rolled my eyes and threw a piece of chicken at him.
"Here, eat this and stop laughing." We started to eat. My food tasted like heaven on a plate. While we were eating, an umpleasent sight walked in. Sabrina came in with one of the richest boys in the school. She was dressed in a short blue dress that cut off just below her thighs. Just below. She didn't see me, but I felt a tear sting my eye. Isaac noticed, and he stopped eating to ask me what was wrong.
"Sarah, are you ok?" I wiped the tear away.
"Yeah, ill be fine."
"What happened?" I shook my head. I wasn't about to let her ruin my night.
"I'll tell you some other time. Right now is perfect, thank you for taking me here." He smiled and nodded. The pianist started playing 'Hallelujah.' Isaac smiled and stood up, coming over to my side of the table. I frowned up at him.
"Uh, hi." He held out his hand.
"C'Mon, let's dance." I looked at his hand, then his face and smiled. He helped me to my feet and we walked out onto the dance floor. There were only a few people there, so we had room to dance. I giggled,
"I can't dance."
"It's ok, neither can I." He smiled and wrapped a hand around my waist, taking my other hand in his. I set my open hand on his shoulder and we started swaying in a little circle. He twirled me about halfway through the song. I giggled and said,
"Well, for a man who can't dance you sure do learn fast." He shrugged.
"What can I say? It's a natural talent." I giggled and punched his shoulder. The song ended and we clapped for the pianist along with everyone else. We paid for our meal and started out the door, Sabrina following me with her eyes. As we sat back in the car, Isaac smiled.
"I want to take you somewhere special." I smiled,
"Where?"
"It's a surprise." He laughed, starting the car and driving off. We started out of town into a trail in the woods. I didn't sense anything wrong, so we talked about random things. Once we were about a mile or so in the trail, he stopped the car and unbuckled himself. We both got out of the car. I sighed,
"God, I wish I brought some sneakers." He laughed.
"I have some extras, if you want them." I giggled and shook my head.
"No, I'll be ok."
"You're sure?"
"Yep." I said, smiling. He nodded and we started up a trail. Since it was night time in winter, it was fairly cold outside. Luckily, I had brought a coat with. The trees looked more mysterious during the night. We walked towards the top of a really big hill. I was heaving by the time we reached the top, due to the fact that I'm extremely out of shape. When we got to the top, Isaac covered my eyes.
"I'm going to lead you around some bushes, don't open your eyes till I say."
"Ok." I replied. He held my other hand and we walked around some bushes and over a few rocks. He suddenly stopped me in my tracks and said,
"Ok, open." I did as instructed and opened my eyes to behold an amazing view. I could see over a forest of snow covered trees against the backdrop of stars. I wish Bennett was here to paint it. I stared with an open jaw, bedazzled. He smiled,
"Do you like it?"
"Isaac...I'm speechless." He smiled with cheerfulness. We looked in silence for several minutes, just watching the stars. A cabin sat only a few feet to our left. Isaac broke the silence by saying,
"I knew you'd like it." I looked at him with a fake frown.
"How would you know?" He shrugged.
"Because it's beautiful, like you." I smiled and looked down at the snow. It shined in the moonlight. My toes were freezing, since I wore flat dress shoes, but I didn't care. I never wanted to leave this moment. At the time, anyways. Isaac took a few steps closer. He set his arm around my shoulders and pulled me in close. I laid my head on his shoulder and inhaled slowly.
"This date is perfect."
"Eh, not quite," he stated. I frowned and looked up at him. He turned to face me.
"Sarah, I want to ask you something important." My initial reaction was excitement. I thought he would ask me to prom. Although I didn't think I'd want to go, I was secretly wishing and hoping that he'd ask me. But what I thought would happen, and what did, were as different as night and day.
He stroked my cheek slowly and sighed.
"Sarah Appleton," he knelt on one knee, "will you marry me?" He held out an actual diamond ring that sat in a small black box. This moment struck me with a combination of horror and shock. 'Marrige? What the hell is he thinking?!?' Is all that ran through my head. I frowned,
"W-what?"
"Will you marry me? We can have the ceremony right after graduation." He smiled. I couldn't tell if he was joking or not, so I giggled a little.
"Y-you're joking, right?" He got up and shook his head.
"No, I'm serious. I love you, Sarah." I stared for another second before I just shook my head numbly.
"No." His eyes dimmed drastically and he frowned.
"W-what? Why not?!"
"Why not?! Why not?!?!" I asked, frowning and stuttering,
"B-because, I have college to think about a-and Jane and-"
"We'll work it out together." He said, setting his hands gently on my shoulders. I looked into his eyes and sighed.
"I'm sorry Isaac. I can't. Not now."
"I said after gradua-"
"Not anytime soon." I interrupted, looking him dead in the eyes. He just stepped back a bit and ran a hand through his hair.
"Oh my gosh...they were right about you." I felt in sudden danger as I frowned and took a half step closer.
"What? Who are you talking about?"
"They told me you weren't special, but I didn't belive them." His back was turned to me and both his hands were on the side of his head. I stepped closer.
"Isaac-"
"No! I won't!" He half yelled half cried. My heart skipped a beat as I said,
"You're beginning to scare me." He suddenly turned around with lightening speed and cupped my face in his hands, kissing me roughly on the lips. My instinct at this point was to resist. I pounded on his chest and started pushing him away. Both his hands wrapped around my lower back, pulling me closer against him. I used my hands to start hitting his arms and trying to squirm away. He simply took my arms and wrapped them around myself, then he got me in a head lock, cutting off my oxygen. We were on the ground now. I was kicking and reaching up to hit his face, but missed each time. He whispered in my ear,
"Its ok, go to sleep. Shh." After a few minutes, I felt myself going to sleep, some how losing my shoe in the process.
