The last week was pretty interesting. Bennett was sitting at our table, putting his arm around me whenever he could. I felt a little akward, to say the least, only because I was not used to him being around so much.
The next Friday came unusually quick, and Bennett had been acting weird all day. Kendra asked me to come with her for something special after school, but she didn't say what. As we sat in the car, I tried to pry it from her,
"Where are we going?"
"You'll see when we get there." She replied.
"Tell me."
"No."
"Tell me."
"No."
"Tell me."
"No, shut up." I giggled and sat back, waiting. We arrived at a place that brought dread to my stomach.
There is only one place in the entire town of Trenton that has a place where ladies can get, well, Brazilian waxes. That place is called Fresh feeling. I groaned and looked at Kendra.
"No, I'm staying here."
"Like hell you are, you're coming with me."
"Nooooo!" I held onto the seat for dear life, but she pried me away and drug us both to the front desk. A woman who had way too much enthusiasm smiled and asked,
"Hello, and what can I do for you today?" As if we were here for any reason but the obvious one.
"My friend and I would like to get waxed." She nodded and walked out from behind the counter.
"This way please." We follewed her to a waiting area where we saw magazines on a table. After we sat down she handed us menus, actual menus, and said,
"This is our selection, please come get me when you have your choices." Then she walked off back the way we came. Kendra looked through it like it was an interesting article on endangered rhinos. I felt all greasy even holding it. As I looked through the graphic pictures and selections, I couldn't tell any difference. Kendra looked up from her menu and said,
"What do you think, 'airport runway', or 'beach in the Bahamas?'" I frowned and said slowly...
"Uh....well, I'd say....beach?" She nodded.
"Yeah, that's what I thought. Ok, what about you?" I bit my lip and said,
"I guess I'll get the polished marble." She nodded and smiled.
"K, let's go tell her." We walked back up to the counter and gave her our orders. She nodded and led us down another hallway to our rooms.
"Here you go, someone will be here momentarily." I waved to Kendra as I entered the room. It reminded me of a doctor's office, unwelcoming and cold. I sat on the table/bed thing they had set up in there and waited. After about ten minutes, a large woman with bright pink hair and a jogging suit came in with a bucket of supplies. She smiled and nodded,
"Helelo, I'm Patricia, but you can call me Patti. I'll be giving your wax today, you're...Sarah?" I nodded.
"Yeah. I've never done this before." She smiled encouragingly and said,
"Dont be afraid, it's very quick. Here, please take off your pants and put this on," she handed me a pair of paper underwear and turned around in the corner.
"Dont worry, I'm not looking." That information still wasn't comforting as I slipped off my jeans and underwear to put on the paper one. After all that was finished, she had me lay down on the table thing.
"Ok, just try to keep your legs apart, and be very still." I nodded and took a deep breath in. She applied wax on the area and placed a strip on top to rip off the wax with. She told me,
"Ok, on three. 1...2..." RIP! I bit back my screams of agony as she threw that strip away and applied a new one.
After everything was all said and done, I felt extremely exposed and my you-know-what hurt like a motherf****r. When we sat in the car, Kendra smirked and informed me,
"That wasn't the surprise." I glared over at her and replied,
"I will kill you." She giggled and continued driving on. We arrived at the fitness center. I groaned and exclaimed,
"Kendra, why?"
"Because it's been a while, c'mon." We walked into the mirrored room with the poles on them. She started palaying music on her phone, which was mostly 5S.O.S. then she took me to a pole and said,
"Show me what you got." I rolled my eyes and took the poles in my hand, spinning once and then standing up
"There, that's what I got." She punched my arm playfully and flipped her hair,
"Watch the master," she jumped on the pole and spun on her leg, then turned up side down and slid down slowly until she reached the floor. When she got up, she smirked and said,
"How'd I do?" I shrugged and retorted,
"I don't know how you can do that after being waxed." Her eyes suddenly got wide and she giggled,
"Holy crap, I almost forgot to tell you!" I frowned at her and asked,
"What?"
"My person was a guy!" I giggled and pointed at her.
"Ha, what was he like?" She giggled more and said,
"He was really polite, and not that bad looking." I giggled.
"I got a girl with pink hair."
"Was she good?" I frowned.
"Well, I haven't been waxed in that place before, so it'd be hard for me to say, but I guess she was ok." Kendra giggled and swing on the pole.
"K, your turn to try. Think, 'sexy.'" I sighed and grabbed the pole, wrapping both legs around it and spinning in a circle. Kendra giggled and nodded.
"Thats it, you're getting the hang of it!" I slid down slowly and used both hands to pull myself back up. When I got up, I ran a hand through my hair.
"I'm done." She smirked and replied,
"We're just beginning." Over the course of the next hour and a half we focused on trying to pole dance. She told me about Kenny and how they were trying to find him a matching tie for prom.
"He was all like, 'it's pink right?' And I'm like, 'No, you stupid ass, it's fusha." I giggled at her story and leaned against one of the mirrors.
"That's funny, Kendra."
"Yeah," then she paused for a moment before asking, "you still don't have a date, do you?" I sighed and shrugged.
"Its ok, Kendra. Some people just aren't meant for love." She got up from the ground and said,
"Dont say that." I sighed,
"I'm just saying some people-"
"Well, those 'people' aren't you. I forbid it." I giggled and pushed her playfully.
"Don't worry about me, Kendra. Just enjoy the time you have with Kenny." She smiled and nodded.
"I can't help but worry, you're my friend." I smiled and gave her a hug. After a minute of hugging, I pulled away and said,
"Come on, let's go." She smiled deviously at me and said,
"This still wasn't the surprise." I rolled my eyes and threw my hands in the air.
"How many more surprises are there today?!?!' She giggled and pushed me to her car. We started off our drive with a guessing game.
"Is it a puppy?"
"No."
"Is it new shoes?"
"No."
"Is it a book?"
"Yes."
"Really?"
"No." She giggled. I huffed and sat back.
"Hmm....I got nothing." She laughed.
"Good, because we're here." We pulled in my driveway. I looked around. Nothing seemed to be out of place.
"I don't get it." She smiled.
"You will later, now get out of my car." I frowned.
"Ooooooook. Bye." I hopped out and she sped down the street. I sighed and went into the kitchen to find some food. After searching for a few minutes, I decided on an orange and some pickles. Hey, don't judge me.
I sat at the table and grabbed Mark Fuhrman's book, 'a simple act of murder.' It was written by a famous detective who wrote about the truth behind Kennedy's assassination.
'And once the bullet was slowed down exiting Kennedy's throat, it could have gone into a yaw and entered conallys back lengthwise, striking his fifth rib at an angle...' I heard my doorbell ring. Sighing, I set my book aside and walked to the door. When I opened it, no one was there. All I saw was a folded price of paper on the porch swing. I picked it up and read,
'You once told me poems should rhyme,
And I said no.
Please drive to Dinas house,
Don't ask questions, just go.'
I giggled at the poem and sighed. I checked the time, 6:26. I grabbed the keys and started driving to Dinas. As I arrived, I noticed that she wasn't home. No cars were parked in the driveway, so I deductd that her parents weren't home either. I walked up to the front door, which was slightly ajar. When I opened the door, I found another note on the coffee table. This one read,
'Now that you've come this far,
Go to the place that holds my car;)'
I sighed. God damn it, Bennett. I hopped back in the car and drove to Bennett's house, knocking on the door. Cc answered and smiled.
"Hi Sarah." I smiled back,
"Hey cc, how are you?" She smiled even brighter.
"I'm great! Daddy left and he isn't coming back!" I smiled at her and said,
"I need to get to your brothers car." She nodded and brought me to the door inside that led to the garage. I thanked her and went to his car. In the front seat I found yet another note,
'I've got another mission for you,
Go to your backyard for something new.'
I rubbed my eyes. This was seriously getting annoying. I walked out of their house and went to my back yard. After searching through a few bushes and almost dying when chestnut jumped out of no where, I found a note that was tied with a pink bow.
'To make sure that there's nothing you miss,
Go to the place that held out first kiss.'
I looked up at where my room was. Nothing. After getting up from my place on the ground, I walked inside and up the stairs.
When I reached my room, I found that the room was empty. I frowned,
"Bennett?" The door creaked and Bennett jumped out from behind it, scaring me. I screamed and hit him in the chest. He fell on my bed laughing.
"Holy crap Bennett, you scared the shit out of me!" He laughed for another second before getting off the bed and breathing. I crossed my arms,
"Is there a reason you were hiding behind my door and leaving all these notes?" He nodded and smiled.
"Yes. Sarah, your beautiful in every way. Your smile is as bright as day. You have an aura as big as the sun, and I think of you even when day is done. So, at the risk of sounding dumb...." He gestured to the window for me to look out. I frowned and walked over to it.
When I reached the windowsill, I looked down. Dina, Lucy, Hannah, and Kendra were all holding up a giant canvas that had the words, 'WILL YOU GO TO PROM WITH ME?' In rainbow colors. My heart soared and my head rushed. When I turned around, I saw Bennett standing directly behind me, holding out a white tiger Lily for me. A doofy smiled was spread across his face. All I could think to do was smile back and nod.
"Yes, I'd love to!" I said, taking the tiger Lily and hugging him tightly. He hugged me back. After our hug ended, he set a hand on my cheek and brushed his thumb over my cheek. I smiled and leaned in, kissing him. He smirked in the kiss and kissed back, putting the other hand behind my head. Sparks seemed to fly and the rest of the world simply melted away for me. At least until I heard Hannah yell,
"You better be using protection, Bennett!" I smiled and pulled away, shouting back,
"Shut up!" He laughed and hugged me again.
"Did you like the poems?" I smiled and kissed his cheek.
"Yes, I loved it."
