We entered the crowded gym right behind our group of friends. Music blasted from giant speakers that almost reached the ceiling. Many people were talking and laughing, having a nice time. Bennett yelled out so I could hear,
"Do you see the booth!?!" I looked around,
"Over there!" I pointed to the corner where a line of people were voting. We headed over to the booth and read the sign,
'DONT ASK, YES YOU CAN VOTE FOR YOURSELF!!!'
Bennett smiled as we approached the paper and pens. He handed me a pen and a paper.
"Ladies first." I smiled and wrote down,
'Boy-Jared Smith. Girl-Dina Marsh.'
Bennett frowned and told me,
"You know you can vote for yourself, right?" I shrugged and explained,
"I know, but I shouldn't be dependant on my own vote. I should just hope for the best." He rolled his eyes.
"I'm voting for us,then." He scribbbled our names down and we set our papers in the box. He gestured to the other side of the gym,
"Lets get our pictures taken." I giggled,
"I probably looked ridiculous in the last ones." He rolled his eyes.
"No you didn't, you looked perfect. Now come on!" He drug us to the line. When it got to our turn, the photographer smiled and said,
"Alright, you put your hand...there. yes, and you smile, yep. Hold it, hold it...." He snapped the picture and smiled.
"Alright, here you go, enjoy." He handed us our picture. I looked at myself and frowned.
"Jesus, I look like a freaking whale in this dress." He rolled his eyes.
"Sarah, no you don't. Trust me." I blushed at his words and couldn't help but giggle. He smirked,
"You are so girly." I rolled my eyes.
"I can't help it, ok?" Suddenly, the vice principle got on the microphone and said,
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have your votes for the prom king and queen!" Everyone cheered and whooped. She pulled out the card and said,
"Our prom queen is...Sabrina!" She waltzed onstage, smiling and taking her crown.
"And our king is...Bennett!" He looked at me with a sorry expression. I smiled and stated,
"Don't worry about me, get up there."
"You sure?" He asked. I smiled and kissed his cheek.
"Yeah, go on." He smiled back and went onstage. A slow song started and they danced together. With no where else to go, I decided not to take up space on the dance floor and just wait on the side lines for Bennett. I leaned up against the wall and watched my friends dance. Dina was lost in jareds eyes, Lucy was trying to ease rover, and Hannah and Mike were kissing like there was no tomorrow. Kendra and Kenny were dancing, but she kept sneaking glances at me, pity in her eyes. I just smiled and waved, swaying to the song.
The second the song ended, people were cheering and whistling for Bennett and Sabrina. He whispered something to the DJ. Kendra walked over to me, Kenny shortly behind her. She set a hand in my arm.
"Are you ok Sarah?"
"Yeah, I'm fine Kendra."
"I just-"
"Attention everyone!" The DJ announced. Everything went silent. He then continued, "the prom king wants to sing a song for the date he brought." He tosses Bennett a microphone, the spotlightwent on him. A low murmer covered the room. He talked into the microphone,
"Sarah, where are you?" Kenny whistled so loud it made my ears pop. The man operating the lights shined a blue light in our direction. They pointed rapidly to me until all I could see was blue lights. I could also see Bennett. He smiled at me and said,
"This is for you, Sarah." They started playing the music. It was aerosmith's, 'Don't wanna miss a thing.' I felt my cheeks getting redder as he started singing,
"I could stay awake, just to hear you breathin'"... He sounded pretty bad. Not gonna lie. Granted, however, he had a French accent. It was still really sweet and made me giggle. When it got to the chorus, he changed up the lyrics a little,
"Don't wanna close my eyes, I don't wanna fall asleep cause I'd miss you, Sarah, and I don't wanna miss a thing!" He started making his way off the stage towards me. People were whistling and cheering for him while my cheeks reached a whole new level of red. He continued singing as he reached me,
"And I don't wanna miss one smile...I don't wanna miss one kiss..." He placed his hands on me and we started swaying in a small circle. Kendra clapped along to the beat of the song. I looked at Bennett and giggled while he said,
"Sing with me!" We sang together until the song ended. When it did, he pulled me in by my waist and kissed me on the lips. Everyone whooped and clapped. His soft lips made sparks fly all around me, making me light headed. It was almost like we were floating on air. He pulled away and smiled at me.
"You're blushing." I rolled my eyes,
"Yeah, I tend to do that when you sing for me in front of the whole class!" He smiled and twirled me once, then dipped me.
"Did you like it?" I placed a hand on his slightly stubbled cheek.
"Yes, I did." He smiled and picked me back up.
"Lets get out of here."
"And do what?" I asked. He shrugged.
"Anything, whatever you'd like." We started out the door, holding hands. I bit my lip and thought.
"Hmm....let's drive to the airport. I want to watch the planes flying in the sky." He smiled and nodded, hopping in the car. We started off to the airport, playing 20 questions. It was currently his turn.
"Is it a person?"
"Yes."
"Is it a woman?"
"No."
"Is he over 40?"
"I'm not sure, he's around that age." He replied. I bit my lip.
"Is he an actor?"
"Yes."
"A famous one?"
"Yes."
"Is it Ryan gosling?"
"No."
"Is it...Leonardo DiCaprio?"
"Yes!" He exclaimed, nodding. I smirked in victory and thought.
"Hmm...ok, I got one."
"Is it a person?"
"Yes."
"Is it a woman?"
"Yes."
"Is she real or from a cartoon?" I bit my lip.
"Cartoon." He smiled.
"Is it wonder woman?" I groaned.
"Yeah, how are you so good at this!?!" He shrugged.
"We're here." He pulled into the driveway and parked near the fence that separated the field from the runway. Planes were cruising by us at lighting speed. We watched in silence for a few moments, by it wasn't very long.
"Sarah?" I looked over at him.
"Yeah?"
"I want to show you something that came in the mail yesterday." I frowned and turned to him.
"What is it? Show me." He smiled as he pulled out a folded letter from his suit jacket and handed it to me. I frowned and took it, reading.
Dear Mr. Bennett Webber,
We are pleased to announce that you have been accepted into our acadamy of the arts. Our semester classes will be ready to sign into on August 5th of this summer. We hope that you will gladly accept, and we look forward to seeing you this coming fall.
Director of administration, J. Barker.
My eyes couldn't believe it. I read it a second time before it really registered. I looked up at him. He was smiling without any control. I smiled widely and reached over to hug him,
"Oh my god, Bennett. This is your dream come true!" I leaned across the seat and hugged him tightly. He placed his hands firmly across my back and hugged tightly back. He chuckled and pulled away.
"I really couldn't have done it without you." I smiled and giggled a little. He smiled and set a hand on my cheek, gently brushing his thumb over my cheek. I looked into his eyes. He stared back, now brushing his thumb over my lips. I continued smiling. He leaned across the center council and pressed his lips against mine, kissing me gently. I loved the way his stubble brushed against my chin, and I wrapped my hands around his head, pulling him closer. He kissed a little bit harder, placing his other hand on my waist. My spine tingled and my heart rate picked up. My emotions and hormones mixed, and I let out a slight moan as he slipped his tongue in my mouth. His hormones were apparently controlling him at that moment too, because he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me to his side of the car, so I was straddling his legs. Stop. I started to undo his tie as one of his hands found its way to my right breast, squeezing it. Sarah, stop. I moaned and started massaging his neck. He leaned up slightly and kissed my neck, letting one of his hands crawl slightly up my bare leg and under my dress....
"Bennett," I pulled away, looking him in the face. He sighed,
"Oh shit, sorry." I sighed and shook my head.
"No, I'm sorry..." He smiled and brushed my cheek lightly with his thumb,
"No, don't be sorry if you aren't ready. What kind of a boyfriend would I be if I wasn't willing to wait?" I smiled and blushed.
"Boyfriend?" He smiled back.
"Yes, boyfriend, if it's ok with you." I nodded and kissed him one more time before I got off and went to the passenger seat. I laid my head on his shoulder. He laid his head on top of mine and sighed. We watched the planes in utter silence for 10 minutes. Just when I began to think he'd fallen asleep, he sighed and said,
"What are we going to do, book thief?" I frowned and looked up.
"About what?" He looked at me and explained,
"When we graduate? What happens when we go to seperate colleges?" I frowned. I had applied to 12 different schools, but none had given me feedback, and the days were trickling down now. I sighed,
"I'm not sure. We should think of a plan." He chuckled.
"A plan?" I shrugged.
"Yes. What's the most important thing in all this?" He smiled.
"I want us to stay together as a couple and not fall apart." I smiled at his sweet response, so I replied,
"Well, I still haven't gotten a letter. If nothing comes back, I could get a job and we could have an apartment together-"
"No, Sarah. You aren't giving up on college that easily." He interrupted. I smiled and said,
"I'm not saying give up, I'm just saying I could put it on hold until you graduate and have a job." He shook his head.
"No, I want you to pursue your dreams, not just stand by and support mine." I bit my lip.
"Hmm...what else then?" We thought for a while, but nothing came. He finally said,
"You could apply at the Bates university. It's only a few miles away from mine, and we could totally get an apartment together." I thought about it for a few minutes.
"Ok, I guess I could give it a try." He smiled and nodded. We continued watching the planes flying everywhere. I looked up at the stars. I thought about what college meant. It meant leaving my friends and family behind. It meant a better education. It meant a better future. And as I looked over at the crazy, intriguing, oddly perfect boy beside me, I realized something; I wanted him to be a part of my better future. Not only that, I wanted to be a part of his. I reached my hand over and slipped it on his hand. He smiled and gave it a squeeze. I gave it a squeeze back, smiling. He piped up,
"Do you think my grandparents are watching us?" Without any hesitation, I smiled.
"Yes, I do." He smirked and kissed my cheek.
"Good."
