Pedri is laying on the corridor like dead with his back against the wall. Gavi's hand that is sliding along the curve of my waist stops dead in its track as he notices his best friend.
We look at each other confused and start tapping him. Thank god, he is just sleeping, not actually dead. I don't even want to imagine what kind of a show there would be if a player is found dead in the middle of a tournament.
Pedri focuses his blurred vision on the two of us when he opens his eyes. There are two emotions reflecting on his face, despair and compassion. He looks powerless like he has no idea what to do.
What has happened to him? He is always so lively and playful. Where is that gaze and energy? Something is wrong. Really wrong.
"Pedri, what happened? Why are you here?" Gavi asks, concerned.
Pedri is not able to answer. He just starts crying. What on earth makes this man act like this?
"Pedri?! I'm serious. What happened!?" Gavi tries again and sounds more worried.
"Why are you not spending time with Madeline?" I ask Pedri and try to look him in the eyes.
He avoids my gaze and puts his head between his knees before answering, "she doesn't want to see me ever again and that is right to me."
Alarm bells start ringing in my head when he says that and I'm actually getting worried. He hasn't done anything to Madeline right? I don't think I could look past that like ever. If he hurts her he hurts me as well.
"What do you mean? Has something happened to her!?" I ask with my voice getting higher on each word.
Pedri looks desperately in my eyes as he answers, "yes, me. That's what happened to her."
"I don't understand what you are talking about at all," Gavi interrupts and I have to admit that neither do I. He happened to her. What does that even mean? I thought they were falling for each other and boom what do I see now.
"And why don't you knock the door? We would have let you in since I can see you're struggling with something," Gavi asks.
"I did knock, multiple times but you guys probably didn't hear and everyone else was sleeping as well so I didn't want to wake all of them up by knocking doors so I just slept here after crying myself to sleep," Pedri answers.
Gavi and I look guilty at each other. His best friend was suffering in pain when we were having fun inside their room. I feel so so so bad. He looks devastated. Like he hasn't slept at all and like he has been crying his eyes out all night. I can't come up with any explanation as to what could cause him to look like this.
"I'm starving and can't wait to get something to eat. Breakfast is going to do good for all of us so you are coming with us Pedri. It will hopefully lift your mood even a little bit and after that we're talking this through," Gavi says and drags Pedri whose legs are like slime towards the elevator.

"You like strawberries princess?" Gavi asks as we are on the line getting breakfast. He looks at me with a face that tells me he remembers really clearly that date where he fed me strawberries when the sun set in the background.I giggle at the memory and my laugh snaps something in Pedri who is on the line in front of us.
"Just to let you know, I'm sitting by myself today," he says and looks from Gavi to me displeased.
"Why? You are welcome to sit with us," Gavi answers.
"No, I can't watch you two being goofy and damn cute all the time," Pedri says and grumps as he walks to the furthest corner possible.
He's moody today and I'm confused as hell. Where is Madeline? I haven't seen her since afternoon yesterday. And then it hits me that I haven't even looked at my phone since leaving our room except when I changed Gavi's name in my contacts. Now my phone is in his room. Oh no, what if she had something to tell me and I haven't even noticed her messages. I feel so bad.
While I'm in my thoughts Gavi fills my plate with all the delicious treats that I have been drooling over the past weeks. Madeline and I made an agreement with England's team that we're not eating goodies in front of the players since they are not allowed to eat anything that contains more sugar than protein during the tournament so we don't expose them to temptation. The room service on the other hand has delivered excellent ice cream and other kinds of treats that we have enjoyed during the weeks. As girls we don't work without getting our daily amount of sugar.
The pancakes, pastries with vanilla cream, croissants and cookies on my plate have never looked so appealing. I'm starving and can't wait to sink my teeth into them. Gavi says I have a glazed gaze in my eyes so it's for the best that we look for a table now. His multigrain buns with ham, cheese and cucumber doesn't look nearly as tempting as my breakfast does.
He gets me my daily multifruit juice and himself orange juice when I'm taking my first bites of the croissant which is really good. I feel like I have never eaten a better croissant or maybe I think like this since I'm so hungry. Even the juice tastes better now than any other day.
For once we're both focusing on eating more than talking and this time we're eating actual food instead of each other.
When I'm starting my second round which contains pineapple, peach and pear slices with vanilla yogurt I notice Madeline on the line getting food. She is by herself which is kind of weird. Where is Mason, Jude or any other one from the team? I mean you can get breakfast by yourself but it's boring because then you're not hearing all the gossip the boys tell at breakfast.
Once she is done picking the food she heads to the tables far on our right. She would have a direct line of sight to Pedri if she glances up but gladly she is not doing that since she is focusing on her meal. Meanwhile Pedri looks at her non-stop. I can't figure out what emotions vary on his face but he doesn't look relieved that is for sure.
Gavi and I enjoy our breakfast moment but I can't help but check on both of them once in a while. It's hard to focus on your own life when there is something weird going on with your best friend and her man.
I'm doing my fourteenth check on round when I notice Madeline having eye contact with Pedri. I know she is telling him something with her eyes since I do that with her a lot. In the corner of my eye I see Pedri getting up from his seat and panic flashes in Madeline's eyes. Whatever has happened between them has clearly shocked Madeline and I'm not letting that man do that to her ever again.
I push my chair back and almost run towards her when I see Pedri walking in her direction. I hear Gavi getting up after me but I'm on a mission to save my bestie. Madeline looks amazed when she notices me. Not a surprise since I just left without leaving any clue after me.
"Pedri stop right there!" I say and step between them.
"Babe, what are you doing?" Gavi asks and looks at the three of us. Pedri flinches when Gavi calls me babe so there is clearly trouble in paradise. I have heard Pedri calling Madeline chiqui or cielito multiple times so it's not that using nicknames is a new thing to any of us. Spaniards love nicknames and so do the Brits.
"I'm taking Madeline to our room right now and you have no right to talk to her," I say while looking Pedri dead in the eyes. "Gavi is taking you to your room and you're sorting this out as well. I'm going to check on Gavi later so you better talk and not have some bro time instead," I continue.
"Don't worry princess. I got this," Gavi answers and gives me a convincing smile.
"Good, see you later then. I love you sweetie," I say and one lonely tear falls from Pedri's eye as 'I love you' leaves my mouth. He and Gavi have a lot to talk about.
"I love you too princess," Gavi wishes after me and taps Pedri on the back. Pedri looks like he is out of his mind right now.
Madeline on the other hand is completely freezed next to me and it takes all my willpower to drag her out of there. Pedri just looks at us sorrow shining from his eyes as Gavi tries to reassure him to keep it all together.
