1997 saw Villeneuve and Michael Scumacher fight for the title until the last race.Villeneuve was starting from pole alongside Schumacher in 2nd.The German got a better start and he was leading,Frentzen also passed Villeneuve at the start,but with team orders the Canadian was up into 2nd.Schumacher was comfortably leading until lap 48 when Villenuve who reduced the gap constantly attacked him into Dry-Sac corner.Schumacher defended hard hitting Villeneuve but without causing massive damage to the Williams.Schumacher had gone into the gravel and lost a lot of positions and eventually retired with unrepairable damage.Villenuve led the race until the last lap when the two McLaren's of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard.With this said,Villeneuve was the World Drivers Champion for 1997
