I felt it was ironic, that in a place such as this her name was Hope.
She had the widest smile, a mouth full of teeth too big, they were overlapping, with the two front buck teeth, but she always showed them when she had a chance.
The smile would be waiting for me whenever I entered our classroom, at least that's what I thought, that she was eagerly awaiting my arrival every morning, even though I saw her direct it at anything.
Why was she like this?
In a place such as this, hopeless and dejected. Wretched and gloomy.
A place where humans were no longer free.
Cursed to be slaves to an extraterrestrial civilization. No different from farm animals, mindlessly following orders and terminated and the first sign of any sort of disturbance to regime. She smiled.
The controllers came to this planet when I was 7 years old, so there's not much I can say about their arrival.
There was a lot of chaos, running and screaming. Moving from one place to another and sometimes there was hiding. Ten years later and I can't rely on my memory to explain the situation, but rather on facts from those who were more aware of the situation and old newspapers that were not destroyed in an act to erase who we were before they arrived. They came in the dead of night, everything went silent then, no sounds from the wind or insects, it was just quiet. If you were not outside at the time, it would have been easy to miss them till the next morning.
There were no loud attacks or killing random people like you see in the movies, their ships were just hovering in the air, everywhere. Nothing, or no one went in or out.
But in the major cities it was a different story, the controllers had killed the leaders of most countries and dominating organizations. All the people that held any sort of power were dead, in their homes with no sign of struggle, they just all died at the same time on the same night somehow.Except for the military commanders.
Then people started to panic, they tried to attack, they tried to fight back, but how do you do so when you don't know what you're fighting? The people who could, tried to get the hovering crafts to crash, or try to get inside, but nothing ever worked. The commotion lasted all but two weeks.
Suddenly, there was a broadcast from the hovering machines that stayed with no movement the whole time,
People of earth, we come in peace. Your world is wasting away, becoming nothing but a barren wasteland.
Do you not see it?
The diseases plaguing you.
The disastrous effects of what you have done to the planet.
The over population.
The pollution. We are here to make sure those things are no more.
You will be taught to treat this planet with respect.Rest assured, you are all safe as long as you obey.
We are in charge now.
On that day, the day of the broadcast the controllers showed themselves, they looked just like us except their necks where slightly longer, they had large elf like ears, large black beady eyes, and bald heads. There skin was a shade of green that almost looked pastel.
On the day of the broadcast everything shifted.
The militaries, which had joined forces in whole to protect the people changed its course. They were now rearing the humans for the controllers.
They were now enforcing the rules of these menacing creatures. From then on, it seems humanity just gave up on freedom and went along with everything.
And just like in the movies, the rebels started to form, erratic in their tactics, the were either killed or they would suddenly pledge their allegiance to the controllers, depending on weather they were deemed essential. We all knew it was mind control.
Then new rebel groups would form, the fighting was constant, leaving behind a lot of devastation.
The controllers began to live among us, though there was evident segregation as you would expect, society had gone into the dark ages of the class system. Human being the bottom of the barrel. Except for the lucky few that managed to stay above it all.
There was no mercy for those who did wrong, the moment you were found guilty, you were a goner, which made it easy for the population to dwindle as they had hoped. All high schools were turned into uniformed boarding schools, children had no contact with their parents during the term, this was to make sure parents would hard diligently for them and children would conform.
Some did, others did not.
It's been ten years now.
Ten years that I haven't felt free.
Ten years forced to live a life of mental and physical imprisonment, I was over it.
