Jean Kirstein leaned against the fence at the Carnival watching everyone enjoy themselves after school was finally done for the summer. It was a nice night and all the lights lit up from the rides. Nothing was on his mind except what he wanted to do next in life. The smell of funnel cakes and warm food filled the air, and everyone's laughter rang in his ears. It was 1947, a much simpler time when no electronics existed, and people just lived in the moment.

He folded his hands over the fence and watched the rides operate. A group walked by that included two guys and two girls who were laughing at each other. He knew two of them which were Sasha Braus and Connie Springer from school but the other two... he didn't know. However, the mystery girl caught his eye. She had perfectly curled hair and she was wearing a blue dress. To Jean, she was beautiful, and he couldn't stop watching her.

As he was watching her intently, an arm flew around his shoulder and pulled him in close, causing him to jump from the sudden snap back to reality.

"Hey Jeanbo, are you enjoying tonight?" It was Marco Bodt, Jean's best friend. He had dark hair and freckles. They had known each other since they were kids and were practically inseparable.

"Yeah..." Jean said. He looked over Marco's shoulder to watch the girl again, "That girl in the blue dress... who is that?" He asked, hoping Marco would know.

Marco turned around and looked at the group. They were all having fun especially, (y/n), whose smile lit up the entire carnival. Jean smirked to himself as he watched her.

"That's (y/n), she's visiting for the summer," Marco answered while leaning over the fence.

"Visiting? Where's she from?" Jean asked in curiosity.

"New York." His freckled friend responded.

"New York?! What's she doing down here in South Carolina?" Jean raised his voice in surprise. It was truly a far hike, he wondered if she had family down here or something.

"Her parents are really rich, they got a summer home here," Marco answered.

"Dammit..." Jean whispered under his breath, "Typical."

He was immediately hurt by the fact that she was rich. He was disappointed that she came from a privileged background and would always get what she wanted and of course, he couldn't provide that for her.

He watched them again as they boarded the bumper cars. Sasha and (Y/n) laughed with each other as they sat in separate cars facing one another. Jean was mesmerized by how she looked.

Sasha took notice of the boys watching and waved with enthusiasm, "Hey boys!" She yelled from her car. Jean smiled and Marco waved back.

"Hey, sweetheart!" Jean's friend said, "Hope you're having fun!"

Jean continued to stare in that direction until he pulled Marco aside once more with a firm grip. The breeze picked up his hair a bit and he adjusted his newsboy hat, "Marco... you gotta help me out here... do you think I have a shot with her? I need to know more about her."

"She's not bad you know; her parents are strict as hell though." Marco looked up at Jean.

Jean rolled his eyes. "Typical that they get to enjoy their lives while we have to bust our asses in the workplace to make ends meet." He crossed his arms and scoffed thinking about how they represent society.

"We have money..." Marco smirked and flashed a ten-dollar bill in front of Jean's face, "I got this bonus at the steelyard today."

Jean smirked back, "Oh yeah? And how much did you bust your ass for that? Because I can spend that in about 5 seconds, not the bragging rights you think it is, Marco."
