(Y/n) rode her bike down the beaten path in the countryside with a large present strapped to the front in the basket. It was now closer to the end of July and the summer heat had been brutal.
With a small amount of sweat dripping down her face, she managed to make it to Jean's house just in time before she was soaked with perspiration.
She hopped off the bike, letting it fall into the grass, and quickly unstrapped the gift from the basket.
As she walked up the small porch she was greeted by an older man who sat on a bench with a beer in his hand.
"And who might you be?" He said in a raspy voice.
(Y/n) turned around, a little startled, and took a good look at the man. He was in his early 50s but seemed to have a strong build. Before she could speak though, the door swung open and Jean stepped out.
"This is my girlfriend, dad."
"Oh! And you didn't tell me?" His father stood up and walked over. He grabbed (y/n)'s hand and shook it, "My own damn son can't introduce us properly, I'm sorry."
"No worries." She said confidently back, "Nice to meet you, Mr. Kirstein."
Jean rolled his eyes, "Let's go inside, there's dinner ready."
As they entered the home, Jean placed his hand on her waist and pulled her close. He whispered into her ear, "Don't mind him... he's hardly part of the family anymore."
As shocking as that was to hear, (y/n) couldn't help but feel a little uneasy at the thought of Jean's dad hardly being there for them. He seemed like a nice man but deep down maybe he wasn't.
The smell of freshly baked bread and tomato sauce filled the kitchen as the two of them stepped inside. Jean's mother was there, like always, cooking up a storm. She turned her head and gave a big smile to the two teens.
"Oh! We finally meet!" She put down some utensils and grabbed (y/n) by the hands, "She's a beauty, Jean!"
Jean blushed and became embarrassed, "uh... thanks?"
"Please! Help yourself to some food!" His mother said before glancing down at the present in (y/n)'s hands, "And what might this be?"
"Oh... it's just a little gift I brought for you guys. It's to thank you for having me over and meeting you." (Y/n) smiled as she handed over the wrapped item to Mrs. Kirstein.
His mom traced her hands over the delicate wrapping paper in awe. It had to have been expensive due to its quality and she would feel bad for ripping the ornate gold paper off.
"Go on!" (Y/n) said, "it's okay..."
She slid her finger under a slip in the paper and began tearing it gently, revealing a beautiful painting of the river that (y/n) could view from her window. The painting was very detailed and had boats along with foliage... Jean's mother almost couldn't believe how talented this was, and even Jean was in awe.
"You... painted that?" Jean asked.
"Yeah... I love to do stuff like that in my free time." She responded
Jean admired her for a moment before speaking again, "I love to sketch but... I never painted." He glanced back down at the painting in disbelief, "maybe you could teach me?"
"I'd be more than happy to." (Y/n) smiled.
Jean bit his lip, "sweet."
His mother glanced around the kitchen and pulled down a different picture to place the painting, "perfect!" She then turned back towards the couple and smiled, "Time to eat?"
