Jan's POV
We had decided to go out to eat that evening to take our minds off the boys heading for college. We went to a restaurant called Moreau's that we normally dined at on special occasions like our anniversary or our birthdays. And Valentine's Day as well.
"This risotto is delicious." Pete said. "How is your shrimp scampi."
"Delightful." I said as I swallowed a bite and then took of drink of wine. "Do you want to go dancing after dinner?"
"I would love to." He said with a smile. A smile which quickly evaporated and was replaced by a look of utter dread.
"Hello mother, hello father." Jane said as she shot invisible daggers at us. "So are you guys having a nice time?"
"Yes we are." I said.
"Nice time celebrating kicking your sixteen year old son out of his home I see?" Jane said.
"We did not kick Justin out of his home." Pete replied.
"Didn't you?" She asked.
"No we didn't." I said with annoyance in my voice.
"So what do you call exiling your son to a boarding school? She said through barred teeth. "Callous tossing him away like he was trash."
"We did not toss him away." I said as anger began to swell inside of me. "We made a decision that we felt was best for us.".
"Best for you son?" Jane asked. "Or best for the two of you?"
"Best for him." Pete said.
"Jane please understand that sending him away was not easy for us." I said.
"Yes the two of you look all broken up while eating shrimp scampi and sipping on wine." Jane shot at us.
"Yes we are broken up." I then said becoming upset. "It was the hardest thing that we ever had to do." Her eyes then began to leak water. "And the only reason we are out here tonight is because we want to try to take our minds off the fact that our little boy is gone and we won't see him for four months. So please stop judging us and let us dine in peace."
"Fine I will let you dine in peace." She said. "But not after I tell you that I think you are both the most selfish, heartless people who have walked the Earth." Her face tensed as she spoke. "Frankly I don't know how the two of you look yourselves in the mirror."
"Great you told us." I said. "Can you please go now."
"Fine I am going." Jane said. "But one more thing."
I rolled my eyes. "There is always one more thing with you isn't there."
"I have decided that it is in Wyatt's best interest if he does not see the two of you." She said referring to her six month old son.
A look of shock crossed my face. "What?"
"You heard me mother."
"You can't be serious." Pete said.
"Oh I am serious." Jane said. "You callously cut your son out of your lives I am going to cut to your grandson out of yours."
The tears flowed down my cheeks quicker as disbelief filled me. How could she do this to us? How could she be so cruel to her own parents? I begged her. "Jane don't do this."
"Its done." Jane said. "Until Justin comes home you won't allowed to be see my son." She then turned and walked away. "Jane." I called out only for her to ignore me. "Jane." I said one more time as pain filled him. I looked at my husband who was equally upset unsure what to do.
