Tia lay face down on the bed, her head lying on her folded arms on the pillow, I propped myself up on one elbow and swept the hair off her left shoulder. I ran my hands along the words that had been inked into her skin “if you don’t reach for the moon you can’t fall on the stars” it didn’t make any sense to me but it was beautiful. I laughed silently as a groan escaped her sleepy lips; I pulled my joggers up and threw on a t shirt.
I was in the kitchen making breakfast when she wandered down, one of my hoodies drowned her body and make up spread around her eyes.
“Morning sunshine!” I chirped. She grunted in return. I gave her a cup of tea and kissed her forehead as I turned to continue making breakfast, “fancy a bacon sarnie?”
“no thanks,” she gagged, wincing as the sun appeared from behind a cloud and light poured into the room, “can I use your shower?”
“Sure,” I laughed, “there’s a towel in the cupboard.”
“Thanks.”
She reappeared later a pair of my joggers and an old sweatshirt of mine, her wet hair was bunched on top of her head in a messy bun and her face had been stripped of make-up.
“I hope you don’t mind.” She said, gesturing to the clothes.
“Of course not!”
I joined her on the sofa and we watched Jeremy Kyle silently.
“Look about last night,” she started, I knew this was coming.
“Don’t mention it, already forgotten,” I assured her, “I probably shouldn’t have drunk so much.”
“It’s not your fault at all!”
“Still friends though yeah?”
“Yeah,” she said, slightly confused, “why wouldn’t we be? You saved me from that prick!”
“Oh, you’re talking about Matt?”
“Yeah? What were you talking about?”
“The sex.” I said simply.
“Oh,” she laughed, “no I’m glad you’ve forgotten that though because I can’t remember the majority of it, no offence!”
“None taken! Just means we’ll have to try again when you can remember!” I winked, risky comment, but these things must be done.
“Oh obviously!” she teased back, “can I stay here for a bit? I can’t face screaming babies in this state.”
“Yeah, stay as long as you like, I’m going training but I’ll be back in a couple of hours, help yourself to whatever.”
“Thanks.” She smiled.
When I got back, Tia was fast asleep on the sofa, I went up and had a shower and came back down to find her pulling her body out of its slumber.
“You’re back soon!”
“No, I’ve been out for 5 hours!” I laughed.
“Oh, oops!”
“Do you want me to take you home?”
“I can walk its fine!”
“Tia you don’t even know where we are!” I chuckled, “let me grab my keys and I’ll drive you.”
“Oh, thanks.” She said quietly.
*TIA POV*
“Do you want to come in?” I asked hesitantly. I wasn’t even just being polite; I genuinely wanted to spend more time with Jacob. He was a distraction.
“No it’s ok, you go.”
“The least I can do is making you dinner?”
“What for?”
“For last night, for saving my sorry arse from Matt, for carrying my drunken self out of the club, for letting me use your house as a sanctuary. Do I need to go on?”
“Ok ok,” he laughed. He parked the car outside the house and we walked in hand in hand.
“Hey,” Alex said slowly, looking from me to Jacob and back again about 5 times.
“Alex this is Jacob. Alex, Jacob.”
“Hey bud.” Alex said, shaking Jacob’s hand but still looking completely lost.
I introduced Jacob to my mum and Pete and all sat and had a drink in the living room. My phone buzzed on the coffee table and a name flashed up –MATT CALLING – I stared at the name for a few seconds and then I clicked the button on the top of my phone and placed it back down on the table. I looked up and caught my mum’s eye, nobody else had noticed the call but mum never misses a beat. She knew I wanted to pick up the phone, talk to him, and make up with him. I knew she could see exactly what went through my brain before I ignored the call.
“Tia, could you help me in the kitchen.” She spoke quietly. I nodded and followed her out to the kitchen.
“What is it?” I asked, knowing full well that she hadn’t pulled me in here to help her with dinner.
“Tia what are you doing?”
“Sorry?”
“With Jacob,” she said seriously, “why are you with him?”
“I’m moving on mum.”
“No you’re not,” she objected, “you’re distracting yourself.”
It sometimes scared me how well my mum knew me.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” I lied.
“He’s a rebound Tia and it’s not fair!”
“I’m doing what I want.”
“Don’t lie to me; I know he’s not what you want.”
Just at that moment my phone buzzed in my hand, Matt’s name flashed up on the screen again. I stared at the phone and waited for the buzzing to stop.
“Answer it,” mum said quietly, “talk to him.”
“You don’t think I want that?” I breathed, feeling a tear hot on my cheek, “you don’t think I want to call him, make up with him, have his arms wrapped around me again?” I took a deep breath before continuing, “You don’t think that he’s all I’ve thought about every day for the last 3 weeks? I want him to hold me and kiss my neck. I want to hear his voice in my ear. I want to talk to him mum.”
“Why don’t you then?”
“I can’t mum,” I sobbed, “I can’t.”
“The only person stopping you is you.”
