familiar knocking sounds fill my ears. groaning loudly, eyes still clenched shut, i roll over facing the door to my room. i reluctantly open my eyes, squinting them as the morning light shines bright in the off-white room. i watch as the doorknob wiggles, hearing signs of frustration behind the door.

"y/n! you locked the door again." i hear my best friend huff.

"i know." i respond, voice still groggy.

"so come let me in." she demands. i laugh, already pulling myself out of bed, feet dragging to the door. i twist the lock on the doorknob, and before i could pull the door open, chaesua barges in. walking past me, she plops on my bed, patting the spot across from her where i was just laying.

"good morning to you too." i say sarcastically, making my way back to the warm bed. as i sit she lays two pieces of paper in between us. "what is that?" i ask picking one of them up to inspect.

"train tickets." she wiggles her eyebrows. i scan over the information on the tickets, my eyes widen when i read the date and time.

"chae these are for tonight!" i point at the time 7:00 p.m.

"exactly, so get packing." she hops off the bed, walking over to my closet where my suitcase rested. she gingerly pulls it out, zipping it open. "we're staying until you find your soulmate." she adds, causing me to groan.

"you don't seriously believe in that crap?" i ask, a small chuckle escape my lips at the thought of it.

"of course i do, you're crazy for not believing in it." she scolds, pulling open my drawer and shoving various shirts into the suitcase. i roll my eyes.

"it's a cash grab, i only did it to prove to you it's not real." i point out referring to the events of last night.

"explain the people all over the world who have met their soulmate because of it then." she says, still shoving clothes into the now overflowing suitcase. "besides, i played too. what are the chances both of our soulmates are in seoul? if you can't go for yourself, go for me." she finally looks up at me with pleading eyes. i groan once more.

"i'm only going so you have a shoulder to cry on when you realize there's no such thing as a soulmate." i finally agree, walking over to here to sort out the overflowing suitcase.

flashback

"oh my god! y/n! is that a soulmate booth?" chaesua roughly shakes my arm, causing me to look in the direction she was pointing. my eyes fall on a brightly colored booth, plopped right in the middle of the city. the "soulmate booth" as people have been calling it. these booths started showing up around the world years ago, housing people who claim to have the power to locate your soulmate. they only tell you where you will meet your soulmate, from what i've read, they can be as vague as the country you will meet them in, or right down to the coordinates. bullshit if you ask me.

"we are not going over there." i immediately protest, attempting to pull her in the other direction, she resists.

"don't you want to know something about your soulmate?" she pleads.

"it's not real, they just make it up on the spot and take your money." i roll my eyes, attempting to pull her again. sensing that she won't be giving up, i come up with a compromise. "okay, let's do it, only to show you that what they say is complete bullshit." she ignores the last half of my comment as she happily drags me to the booth. faint twinkling noises fill my ears as we approach the booth. "do you hear that?" i ask, sort of irritated from the odd sound.

"starwriting." a voice from the booth speaks out.

"huh?" i ask, freeing myself from chaesua's grasp, attempting to peer into the booth. i spot an older woman dressed in bright blue. she looks at me through hooded eyes.

"do you wish to play?" she asks. chaesua happily pushes me closer to the booth, the twinkling sound is now louder, and even more annoying. i look back at chaesua, where she is smiling brightly, ushering me to "play".

"yeah, sure."  i murmur in response. the woman laughs.

"place your offering in the jar." she motions to a jar overflowing with money labeled '$20'. i roll my eyes and pull a twenty dollar bill from my wallet, shoving it into the jar. "starwriting." the woman speaks again.

"yeah you said that already." i blurt.

"tsk. tsk. impatient." she growls.

"can you turn that down?" i ask, the twinkling noises practically rattling my brain. she shakes her head.

"i can't turn down what only you can hear." she turns around. i furrow my eyebrows, ready to question her, but before i can, she turns back around, a map in her hand. she spreads it open in front of us, i quickly recognize it as a map of seoul. "point." she commands.

"what?"

"point." she simply repeats. i stutter, but slowly raise my hand to point somewhere on the map. she laughs as my finger makes contact with the paper. "that's what i thought." she quickly folds up the map, causing me to remove my finger. she scribbles some words on the back of it before handing it to me. "starwriting" she repeats.

"is that even a word?" i ask, hesitantly taking the map that now has an address written on it.

"ask him." i furrow my eyebrows and turn to chaesua who is still smiling.

"who?" i turn back to the booth, the woman suddenly gone, the twinkling noises suddenly stopped. "okay that was creepy." i say, slowly backing away from the booth.

"that was magical!" chaesua cheers. "my turn!" she hops closer to the booth, the woman appears again. i look down at the address written on the map. '509 main street, lee's sandwich shop'. ridiculous. i mumble to myself, looking up to see chaesua putting money in the jar.
