a leap of faith

"it's so pretty here." i smile, leaning my head onto chan's shoulder as we watch the sunset over the ocean.
"i'm glad you like it here." he squeezes my hand, placing a kiss on top of my head.
"i can't believe i was so worried to come here." i laugh at the thought.
"if anyone should have been nervous it should have been me." chan clears his throat.
"why would you be nervous?" i ask, closing my eyes, taking in the beautiful sounds of the beach.
"i've never brought a girl home." he admits.
"but you knew they would love me." i comfort.
"i guess so, but it's still a big deal to me."
"i get that, i'm glad it went well for both of us." i rub his arm. "i will admit though, i'm getting a little homesick." i giggle.
"yeah, i miss the guys." he agrees.
"i'm surprised they haven't been blowing up our phones." i laugh.
"me too," he starts laughing and his phone vibrates. "spoke too soon." he flips his phone to face me. it read:
incoming call: minho
"aww i miss minho!" i say happily. he smiles before answering the call. "hi minho!" i yell once the call connects.
"y/n! i miss you!" he replies. "you too chan... kinda." minho jokes. we all laugh.
"what's up?" chan asks.
"just wanted to ask when you land tomorrow, the guys and i are wanting to pick you up from the airport."
"i think it'll be around 2 pm." chan replies.
"got it, we'll see you soon! we miss you!" minho makes fake kissing noises through the phone before hanging up. chan and i giggle at minho's cuteness.
"hey what was that 'surprise' you were working on on the plane?" i ask, suddenly remembering.
"it's still a surprise." he laughs.
"but we've been here for a week!"
"and you'll see it when it's ready." he wraps his arm around my shoulders. "but we should go, it's getting dark." he motions to the sun, now almost completely swallowed by the ocean. he stands up, dusting the sand off of himself, reaching his hang out for me. i take his hand and he lifts me off the ground. i dust the sand off of myself as well as we walk up to the sidewalk. the walk to his house was about fifteen minutes.
"you know, i used to think this whole soulmate thing was just a cash grab." i admit. "remember how when we first met, i didn't believe in soulmates." he laughs.
"i remember. i used to think it was fake too. jisung and minho convinced me it was real."
"is that why you wrote the song?" i ask. he nods.
"i tried to pretend it wasn't real when they told me yuna wasn't my soulmate. i couldn't imagine myself with anyone but her." he admits. "that's why i got so mad when i saw you with an identical copy of the map they gave me."
"they gave you a map too?" i ask.
"yeah," he pulls out a piece of paper from his pocket. "i ripped it in half just like i did yours, i only have this half now." he unfolds the paper, revealing the left part of the familiar map.
"i carry mine with me too..." i say, as i pull out the ripped map. "but i lost the other half." i unfold the right side of the map, holding it up to his half. we watch as the pieces line up perfectly.
"it's still kind of crazy how they know." he places his side back into his pocket, i do the same with mine.
"right? even though we started out hating each other, they were still right." i laugh.
"it truly was written in the stars."
"there you go with your cheesy quotes again." i interlock my fingers with his.
"i'm a song writer, what can i say?" he shrugs.
"you definitely have a way with words." i tease.
"you think so?" i nod.
"i know so." he sighs nervously.
"alright then, tell me what you think about this..." he starts. we stop walking, the lights of the city on one side, the waves of the beach on the other as we were crossing a bridge. he looks at me, nervousness written all over his face. i furrow my brows. "your eyes told me a story i never knew i needed to hear, but the moment i heard it, i knew it was the only thing i ever wanted to hear again. when i met you, though i was cold, my heart longed to see you again. every time your eyes would fall on me, heat would flood my veins, and i had already planned out the next way to get you to look at me, even if it caused us pain."
"chan..." i breathe out, feeling happy tears sting, threatening to fall.
"you are the love story i longed for, and i hate that i ever even thought to push you away. but the further i pushed, the closer you would come. i always thought love took time, but i knew the minute i laid on eyes on you that love has no clock. you fit into my life like a glove, my friends accepted you, even my family accepts you. it's almost like you've been here this whole time, i feel as if i grew up with you." a tear streams down my cheek, chan pauses to wipe it away.
"i don't ever want to spend a moment apart from you again..." chan kneels down on one knee. i gasp.
"oh my god..." i whisper.
"kang y/n, i think it's time we promise each other our lives. i'm ready to give you the world..." he pulls out a velvet box. my hand flies to my mouth, more tears uncontrollably spill. chan's eyes beginning to water as well. "my soulmate... y/n... will you make me the happiest man on earth, and marry me?" he finishes, a single tear slipping down his cheek. he opens the velvet box revealing a shiny silver ring, a bold yet dainty diamond in the middle, glistening under the night sky. it was beautiful. i fall to me knees, becoming eye level with him. i reach out and wipe his tear off his face. he smiles at me, anticipating my answer.
and so i give it to him.
