chapter 8: back at barry's

I wake up, with Rafe's arms wrapped around my waist underneath the warm olive green covers.

I peek over towards the dirty blonde haired boy laying down, seeing him still sleeping. I look over towards the clock.

9:38am.

"Shit, Rafe. I gotta go." I whisper, tapping his shoulder lightly.

He slowly opens his eyes, blinking a few times.

"You can't just stay here with me?" He asks, while looking at me with his beautiful ocean coloured eyes.

"No, I can't" I yawn.

"I have to go meet Kie and them. I don't wanna break my promise. But I had fun with you last night." I giggle as he smirks in response.

Something about him. He's so cute. I've never had these types of feelings for him before, it was always platonic. But recently things started to change.

"Yeah, alright. You can uh- you can get ready in my bathroom. Spare toothbrushes are in there." He lets me know, as he gets up and opens his drawers, rummaging through them.

He throws me a pair of grey sweatpants and a dark blue t-shirt. It's always been one of my favourite shirts he owns.

I nod, looking up at him standing tall.

About 15 minutes later, we're ready to go.

We hop into his car and slowly drive out of the driveway of Tannyhill.

"Hey Cass uh- before I drop you off I gotta just stop somewhere quick. That alright?"

"Yeah sure.. where?" I ask, feeling like I'd already known the answer.

"Uh- Barry's."

"Oh. Okay. That's fine- I didn't know you uh, started using like that." I say softly, a feeling of guilt rushing through me, pumping through my veins.

"Yeah I guess, I uh started when we stopped hanging out."

A moment of silence proceeded.

Was it my fault?

"I-"

Just as I'm about to speak my mind, he cuts me off changing the subject.

"So Cass, I thought maybe we could go to the Country Club later?"

I look at him for a second, hesitantly.

"Maybe, I'll text you and let you know to make sure."

"Alright princess."

Unsurprisingly, I start to feel that overwhelming feeling in my stomach. Butterflies taking over once again.

We approach the trailer park, driving right up to Barry's trailer.

"You uh- you don't gotta come in if you don't want to alr-"

"No. I want to come. Haven't seen B in ages."

We exit the vehicle. I felt a little nervous to be back there again. So many memories. The last time I'd been here, I had overdosed about an hour later. Never again.

"Country Cluhhh." I hear his voice. Many memories coming back to me.

"Shiii you early!" He yells.

"C? Cassie? Damn girl it's been too long where you been?" He reaches in for a hug.

Me and Barry had been close, when he used to sell to me. He was always one of the people that always looked out for me, making sure nothing happened to me while using. He also let me crash whenever I needed. I can tell he regrets selling to me. He was like an older brother.

"Alright man you got my shit though?" Rafe asks, rushing.

"Hell yeah I got your shit, chill the fuck out man."

"Listen Barry, I'd love to stay and chat but I gotta get Cassie somewhere soon alright? So lets hurry this up yeah?"

I smiled lightly, now knowing that he cared about me and my schedule.

Barry takes out a bag of coke. I stare at it. I look away as Rafe looks back at me.

"Where's my money Rafe?"

The boy turns his head back.

"I uh- yeah so Barry, don't worry imma get you yo-"

"Nah Country Club. No more of this again. Money or no coke."

Rafe chuckles, with a worry some tone in his voice.

"I- Listen. I don't have it all right now alright?"

Barry puts the coke back.

Looking back at this, I don't know if this was the best decision to have made. But I tapped Rafe on the shoulder and passed him a handful of cash. I knew how much it would've been considering I used to buy from Barry.

"You sure?" Rafe whispers as he looks up into my eyes.

I nod, with a small smile.

Rafe passes Barry the money and they exchange items.

"See you around Barry."

"Hell yes I will Country Club. Keep my girl Cassie safe ight?"

We both enter the car once again. I turn my phone on.

9:59am.

"Uh- I, yeah thanks for that. I'll pay you back I- I promise."

I look at him.

"It's alright Rafe. I owe it to you, okay?"

He stares into my eyes.

A few moments shared of awkward silence.
