chapter 14: the country club incident

FLASHBACK - LAST SUMMER

Because JJ picked up a couple shifts at the Country Club, and Kiara and I have our own memberships because of our parents, we three wanted to hang out there. Even though technically me and Kiara are underage, the manager is good friends with are parents, considering they both own popular hotspots in the OBX. We thought it would be fun. Pope has deliveries for Heyward all day, so he was bringing John B along with him.

"Where are you girls heading today?" My mom asks, as me and Kie put our shoes on.

"Uh Country Club.. why?" I ask.

"I can't know where my own kids are?" She scoffs.

"It's great that you guys are using the memberships, we have them for a reason." She continued.

"Yeah.. anyways we'll be back later." Kiara interrupts.

We exit the house together and hop into the car.

Some time later, we arrive at the Club.

"Can I get you two girls anything?" A voice says, approaching us from behind.

"Jayj!" Kiara shouts.

Kiara and I take a seat and chat for a bit, JJ coming to our table every so often. We over order drinks just so he can keep coming back.

I look over my shoulder and see Rafe Cameron, standing by the bar with Topper and Kelce.

We're close friends, but recently he's been a bit distant. He's probably busy.

"I'm gonna go use the bathroom." Kie tells me.

I smile and I give her a thumbs up.

JJ comes back around to the table.

"Your drink." He says as he smiles and
places it on the table.

"Thanks."

He takes Kiara's spot and we talk for a bit.

"You wanna sneak over tonight?" I ask.

"You know I do." He winks at me.

I shoot him a small smile.

"I gotta go, on the clock."

Me and JJ had a complicated relationship. This summer we started hooking up, kind of leaving us in a situationship. We never really sat down and talked about anything, but it felt right.

I see Kiara exit the bathroom, passing Rafe. She stops to talk to Rafe, Topper and Kelce, as she points at me. I've never really seen her talk to them. But I didn't think too much of it, considering he's my friend.

She walks towards the table and smiles at me.

"What was that about?" I ask.

"Oh uh- I just wanted to say hi."

I had a feeling that wasn't exactly her plan. But I didn't bother going any further trying to pry it out of her.

I look back over my shoulder to see Topper and Kelce, but without Rafe.

I looked around without any sight of him. I look back towards where JJ was walking, right behind the bar. Rafe struts as he walks, seeming angry. He's walking over to JJ.

My heart races, I've never seen Rafe so... hostile?

"Hey!" He shouts. Everyone in the Club goes silent.

In a matter of seconds, Rafe's hand smashes into JJ's face, his ring hitting the center of JJ's nose.

JJ falls back. He slowly touches his nose in realization that there was blood gushing out of him.

"Rafe!" I yell.

I get up and run over to JJ.

"What the fuck man!" JJ angrily shouts at him.

He shoves JJ into a glass table. The table falls back with him.

Kiara sits there, with a shocked look on her face.

"Jayj" She screams.

All I can do is stand there as I stare at Rafe, my lips quivering. I don't know what to do.

"Hey! Get outta here!" Security yells.

Rafe storms off.

"JJ I- I'm so sorry." Kiara whimpers.

I had a feeling that she wasn't just sorry he got hurt...
