It was blistering hot in Gunsmoke even early in the morning. Despite the dunes that stood tall, looming over the small campsite, it was still enough to make the two wanderers sweat. Fanning themselves off near an abandoned oasis, refilling their water tanks, and polishing their weapons before they were supposed to be off. It was a slow morning start compared to other times.

"Vash," The bounty hunter spoke gruffly, "How far from town?" They air out their jacket and shake rocks out of their boots. Preparing the water for their journey and even taking out their rations for easy access.

Vash however was more focused on poking around (Y/n)'s things, "What (Y/n)? Oh, uhh.. I say another couple hours." He smiles widely and goes back to poking around the bag. Picking at the tassels and even trying to find extra food.

"Not bad..." (Y/n) groaned and started to reassemble themselves. Shuffling on their padded jacket and hat before stepping toward their bag and Vash, "Let's head out while it's still early. Don't wanna get caught up out in the dark." They speak plainly before starting to walk. Trying to hold some conversation and even slipping in a smile ever so often.

The further into the desert they walked, the more Vash began to complain. Louder and louder about the heat, rations, and even water.

"How are we already out of water? I've barely drunk it!" Vash threw his hands in the air, "And what about the rations!? You still have some!" He slumped backward with a displeased groan, looking at (Y/n) with a pleading face. He raised his voice and faked teary eyes, "Can I have some of your rations, please?"

"You've already eaten yours and finished your water. If you've to rely on me every time, you'll probably end up worse than how I found you," Their voice was stoic, though they still relented and reached to hand Vash their water pouch, "Don't drink it all. We're still a good few hours from the city." They watched Vash drink some and then hand the pouch back, still partially full.

Despite being a nuisance, (Y/n) couldn't find themselves saying 'no' to Vash.

Now that he was satiated, he smiled, looking up at (Y/n) with curious eyes. His voice leaked mischief, leaning forward with a smirk, "We've been traveling together for a few weeks, you and I. Are you ready to tell me-"

"No." There was no hesitation. A bitter look to (Y/n) now as they kept walking.

"Oh come on, we're buds! Practically best bros! You can tell me anything!" Vash reaches to grab (Y/n)'s shoulder which only results in (Y/n) flinching before sighing. They felt his face heat up as they looked up toward the sky, gauging the time based on the sun.

"I'm not telling you because it's not your business. My childhood was rough, and that's it." They pull their body away from Vash, noticing how serious he got.

"You don't have to tell me anything, but I would like to know you better." He doesn't have a smile anymore, instead just staring at (Y/n) with softened eyes. He straightened himself out to walk side to side with his companion.

"Thank you, but again, still, I'm not going to." (Y/n) could see out of the corner of their eye how Vash looked vaguely disappointed but didn't say anything. Instead changing the conversation to something much different. Anything to fix the mood.
