Potentially Carrie is just as powerful mage, like her father was. Being the oldest child in the family, she had to help her mother to take care about her younger brother and sister... sacrificing her own wishes. Also being Apostates, Carrie and Bethany had to hide their magic powers, and Carver born without magic envied his sisters. And if Bethany was not a conflict person, Carver and Carrie often fought each other. Sometimes Carrie wished, she was the only child or she could leave and never return... And then the Blight happened.
Only when Carver joined the Grey Wardens and left, claiming that he no longer needed Carrie's so called protection, she young woman finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Carrie fell in love with Anders and stood with the mages in the final confrontation. She barely managed to restrain herself so as not to kill the demandive Sebastian who insisted that Carrie herself must kill her beloved Anders.
Eventually the two got away. And several years later Varric asked Carrie to help his another friend and Carrie's fellow mage, the young woman named Shellarine Trevelyan known as the Inquisitor (that's my Dragon Age 3 character's name).
