Alex's POV

Hearing the sound of my child's heartbeat was so surreal. As I listened to the steady thumping, my heart swelled with pride.

I made that happen.

Then the doctor began to move the wand to the opposite side of Ari's abdomen. I wanted to protest but I kept quite. As the heartbeat grew louder again
it all became clearer. "We're having twins."

"Yes sir, it appears so."

I was overwhelmed with happiness and pride. For the first time in my life I was speechless.

"You look a little small to be three months pregnant with twins though ma'am." The doctor said, "But you do look bigger that the average woman at this point in their pregnancy. How has your morning sickness been? "

"I-I haven't been having the best of days, I can hardly keep anything down before, two o'clock each day." Ariel admitted.

Hearing that, struck a nerve. I leaned down and whispered an apology. She told me it wasn't my fault but I couldn't help but think it partially was.

And I wasn't there to help.

It had only been four or five hours since I'd accepted this child, or these children, were mine. And I already felt protective over them. Ariel and my babies. So realizing what she'd been going through in my absence, had me feeling remorseful.

Well I'm here now.

They will never suffer or want for anything as long as I live.

"Well, I'm going to put you on a stronger prescription, because you need all the nutrients you can get, and no, it will not harm the babies." She added reading my exact thoughts.

As she walked out of the room, I looked over to Ari and saw that she was still in a daze. "I'm having two babies. How am I supposed to work, and take care of two children alone? What if-"

"You won't be alone." I stated cutting into her hysteria. "I'll be right here with you for the rest of the way, just as I've been here today. I've let three months of this experience go by without being a part of it. I won't leave, and you can't make me." I said gently, but hopefully with enough conviction to make her believe it.

"How will I know that?" She asked in a small voice.

"Because I'm here now. And I'll show you, but only if you let me." I said holding her eye. She nodded in accordance.

Just then the door opened, and the nurse told us we could go into the waiting room while we waited for our ultrasound pictures and the doctor to give us the papers for the prescription and vitamins.

Just then a thought came to my head, and I knew it would be hell to get her to agree.

But it'll be worth the try.

Ariel's POV

As we exited the doctor's office, I noticed a gleam in Alex's eyes.

It wasn't the happy spark, it was that gleam that had me dreading the next thing that would come out of his mouth. That mischievous gleam.

As we walked out, I saw Anna with my car ready to take me back to work. Thank you Anna. Because my feet were killing me. As I walked over to her, I noticed Alex following me.

Oh no, no, no this won't do.

"Where do you think you're going? " I asked as I got into the driver seat of my car.

Stopping at the passenger door he said, "With you to go get my car at the restaurant? "

"No you're not. If I remember correctly, you said I couldn't ride in your car."

He suddenly had a bout of amnesia. "Really? When was this?"

I just pulled my seatbelt on and started the ignition. I glimpsed in the rearview mirror to make sure Anna was in the backseat, which she was, with her ear buds in trying not to out right laugh at this situation.

"Oh, come on! Are you really going to make me walk all the way back to the restaurant? "

"Did you really make me, a pregnant woman, walk all the way to the doctors office?" I said determinedly.

Although it was technically my decision to walk there, it was because of his stupid ultimatum about me talking to him. He knew I didn't want to speak to him at the time, therefore, it was his fault I had to walk.

His whole demeanor changed, "No, but it's okay, I'll walk." He said coolly and instantly walked away.

Okay.

As we arrived at the office again, I had the strongest feeling something was off. When I  got into the building, my suspicion was confirmed when there was no one in the lobby but the receptionist. "Anna, I didn't know we had a male receptionist." I whispered over my shoulder, only to find she wasn't there.

What the hell.

As I approached the reception desk the man looked up.

"How did you get here so fast?"

"Bayonet High School's record holder for fastest mile ran in class of 2007." He smugly smirked.

That sudden urge to slap him came back again. "Where are all of my employees? " I asked narrowing my eyes.

Silence.

I took a deep breath. "Where are my employees? " I asked through gritted teeth.

" I... sent them home?" He stated making it sound more like a question.

10....9....8....7....6....5....4....3....2....1

I took another deep breath, "And why on Earth would you do that?" I asked with my teeth gritting together even harder. I could almost feel the steam coming out of my ears.

"So that I... could be alone with you."

He is really trying my patience right now.

"Please tell me, why did you want to be alone with me? And why couldn't we handle this in my office?" My voice sounding as cold as Mt. Everest during the winter solstice.

"Because I had to ask you a question?" He stated sounding evasive.

"Now please do tell me what your question was that was so important that you just had to send my employees home with a good two hours of work still remaining." I stated sarcastically.

"Will you marry me?"
