Shanelle POV

As I drove through the familiar streets toward my parent's home, a mix of excitement and nerves churned in my stomach. I was on my way to deliver some important news to my parents, and the thought of their reaction made me feel a little uneasy. I had just received an invitation to participate in a high-profile fashion show in LA, and it could potentially last for an entire week. It was a significant opportunity for my modeling career, but I knew my parents were never thrilled about my chosen path.

Arriving at the grand entrance of the mansion, I couldn't help but marvel at its opulence. The well-manicured lawns, the intricate architecture, and the imposing wrought-iron gates—all spoke of a world far removed from my current reality. The butler, Mr. Kensington, greeted me with his customary kindness and escorted me inside.

Mr. Kensington led me through the lavish hallway, past exquisite artwork and glistening chandeliers. The house had an air of elegance and formality, just like my family. We finally arrived at the dining room, where my parents and sisters were already waiting. My mother was the only one who acknowledged my presence, offering a warm smile and a hug as I took my seat.

The maids immediately began serving a sumptuous feast of rich, gourmet food. Silver platters were passed around, revealing succulent roasted meats, decadent sides, and delicate pastries. The table was adorned with delicate china and sparkling crystal, a stark contrast to my humble apartment and modest lifestyle.

Once dinner was underway, my older sister Shelby turned her attention to me. She was a formidable figure, with her perfectly coiffed hair, impeccable fashion sense, and an air of sophistication that intimidated me. We rarely saw eye to eye, and our conversations were often fraught with tension.

"So, Shanelle," Shelby began, her voice tinged with curiosity, "I heard you've been getting quite a bit of attention in the modeling world. How's that working out for you?"

I took a moment to collect my thoughts, feeling the weight of her piercing gaze.

"It has its ups and downs," I replied cautiously, choosing my words carefully. "But overall, it's been a thrilling journey. This opportunity in LA is a significant milestone for me."

Shelby raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. "Fashion shows and photo shoots, huh? Is that all there is to life?"

I sighed inwardly, knowing that this conversation was likely to go downhill.

"There's more to it than what meets the eye, Shelby. It's not just about the glitz and glamour. It's about expressing oneself, creating art, and pushing boundaries."

As if sensing the tension, my younger sister Shay smiles at me. She had always been the peacemaker of the family, and her warm demeanor contrasted sharply with Shelby's icy disposition.

"Congratulations on your engagement, Shay," I said to her, with a forced smile. "Jason is hot, so good catch."

She mustered a weak smile, still surprised by my unexpected support.

"Thank you, Shanelle. I'm glad you approve."

Our conversation soon shifted to Shay's upcoming wedding. It was a bittersweet moment for me, as I realized she would be the first to walk down the aisle. Our parents had struggled to accept her relationship with Jason, especially considering his past rivalry with our family business. The atmosphere at home had changed drastically since the loss of our older brother Shawn, who, despite our differences, had always been closer to Shay than any of us. His absence left a gaping hole in all our hearts.

Just as I was beginning to relax into the conversation, I decided it was time to share my news. I cleared my throat, gathering everyone's attention.

"I have something important to announce," I said, my voice steady but my heart pounding. "I'm flying to LA tomorrow morning for the fashion show."

My father's disapproving scowl was instantaneous.

"You know we don't like you being away from home for more than a week," he retorted sharply. "Your modeling career has caused enough trouble already."

I took a deep breath, steeling myself for the battle ahead.

"Dad, this fashion show is a big deal for me," I pleaded earnestly. "Aunt Serene wants me there, and it could open up incredible opportunities. I need to be in LA."

The room fell silent as my father contemplated my words. Finally, he relented, albeit reluctantly.

"Fine," he grumbled, "but don't expect us to be thrilled about it."

"Not that I expect you to." I mumbled under my breath.

As dinner drew to a close, I bid my family goodbye. Shay was the only one who wished me a happy trip, surprising me with her genuine warmth. I mustered a grateful "thanks" without a smile and made my way back to my car.

As I drove home, the satisfaction of finally sharing my news mingled with the bubbling excitement of the impending fashion show. Despite the strained relationships and the disapproval, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and determination. This was my chance to prove myself and carve my own path, even if it meant navigating the treacherous waters of my family's expectations.

I couldn't help but wonder what awaited me in the bright lights of LA.
