Katoria Halim
Today, Uncle Ty was having a cookout because of a Sunday football game. At first, I didn't want to go but then my mother reminded me of all the good food I'd be missing out on and I quickly changed my mind.We were on our way right now and we were both dressed pretty. I wasn't trying to impress anyone, but she insisted I dress up.
"I think you need to straighten your face when you get there. No one wants to be around you if you're going to mug anyone that speaks to you, Myri." My mother said.
"I don't want anyone speaking to me, ma. You know that." I said looking at my freshly white painted toes. I left my short hair straight today.
"Why Myri?" She asked. I felt like I was going to say something to hurt her feelings so I turned the radio up and tuned her out.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her shake her head. I hoped she wasn't going to cry because I honestly don't want to deal with her right now.

"You invited that girlfriend of yours?" My dad asked Marlo. I shook my head thinking about Alexus. I don't like her, but it seems like Marlo in love with her."Yeah, and I wasn't even thinking about Katoria when I did." He said rubbing his face.
"What you mean?" He asked.
"They got into it at school last week." I said.
"Over what?"
"You know Katoria mean as fuck already. So, Alexus was tryna joke with her and Katoria mugged the fuck out of her," I said and had to pause and laugh," so Alexus got mad and then they started arguing." I explained.
"Nigga, nobody asked you shit. Shutup." Marlo said and my dad popped his head, making me laugh, but then he popped mines too.
"Watch y'all damn mouth. Now, lemme tell you something about your cousin. She might be quiet, but she might get crazy 'cause that's how her dad is. Just looking at her, I could tell she was exactly like him. I told you that to tell you that if her and Alexus gets into it today, make sure it's not in my house and don't let Katoria fuck her up too much." He said before grabbing his beer and left.
I took in everything he said and thought about it, then looked at Marlo.
"So basically what he saying is, she's crazy." He said taking the words right out of my mouth.
"Yeah, I figured that when her and Alexus was arguing. She was so calm, and it was creepy." I said.
The doorbell rang and Marlo got up to get it. In came Jarret and Darren, friends of ours. We've all been close since elementary, and we're still close in out last year of high school.
"Wassup bitches?" Jarret loud ass said. My mom came from the back and started moving towards him. I got up and stopped her.
"My bad, Mrs. Halim." Jarret said backing up. Everybody knows my ma don't like us cursing, and this nigga always forgets.
"Mhm, yo bad. Next time, it's gone be yo ass!" She said turning around and going back to the back.
Once I heard the door close, Darren started laughing along with Marlo.
"Damn, I should've been yo daddy boy." Jarret said and I raised my hand to slap him but he moved.
"Don't be talking 'bout my auntie, nigga. What y'all been niggas on?" Marlo asked as we sat down on different couches.
"Shit, nothing other than hustling." Darren said. He's a dope boy, and he sells on corners.
"We know that, nigga."
"Well, I been tryna get at this bad lil broad for a minute, but she won't even give a nigga her name." Jarret said.
"You ain't ever had game, nigga." I said and we laughed.
"Yeah, whatever." He said.
"Aye, Xae, y'all come outside and help with all this food." My dad said. We all got up and he dapped up Jarret and Darren.
We walked out to the backyard and I took in all the food he cooked. This wasn't a surprise to me because whenever my dad cooks for a football game, he goes all out.
It took us thirty minutes to get all the food in plastic containers so people could get them, and set things up.
"Alright, people should be showing up any minute, so go put on a damn shirt Xae!"
