Chapter Seven - Sisterly Affection

In the Underworld
At this point, outside the Elysium Fields, the underworld seems to be the same terrifying place with the same volcanoes, the same lava lakes and waterfalls, the same screams of tormented and screaming men and women.
Berenice did not miss those at all, and at least now she got used to them.
But, for her new companion, Calliope, this is absolutely terrifying and it causes her to tremble.

Berenice moving forward fearlessly holds the terrified girl as close as possible with her weapons ready for battle and Calliope holds her waist tightly as screams fill and torture hers.
So many voices, so much pain and horror, so many screams, something unheard and unknown for the ears of a little girl.

Even if Berenice was upset with these noises but now she must look stronger, for Calliope.
If she appears to be cowering, the little girl will feel unprotected. She must become the known ruthless warrior who protects others without mercy towards the enemy just as she did for Atreus.

Berenice:Whatever happens... remember to stay close to me. Don't walk away alone in unknown places. If we encounter monsters, hide immediately.

Calliope nods positively at the girl as she makes sure she doesn't leave her side for any reason and they begin their journey.

Berenice tries to remember how to get from the temple of Persephone to a different part of the place where Lysadnera, her mother, was found.
She must not follow the same path she took before, but if she takes a boat and cross the river in order to arrive to the land around the perimeter perhaps Persephone will not follow them.

Surprisingly, now that the two girls are coming out of the gate, Berenice does not see Athena or Eir in that pavilion.
It makes perfect sense that Eir returned to Valhalla but where could Athena have gone? She does not even know if she will see her again but she wishes she could somehow see her even one more time to at least say one last goodbye.

To begin, in the long, great temple all they do is Berenice plotting in her mind a different course, her eyes open for any enemy, and Calliope holding her hand tightly, afraid to let go.
Both of them remain silent and pensive, throughout this long wearisome route of the temple which Berenice traveled before with Athena until at last, after a long wearisome walk, they both end up towards the long and vast gray river of her Styx, in which river the souls of the dead float and flow and scream for some kind of salvation.
Berenice has certainly crossed this lake, together with her uncle, but now she does not remember anything at all.

Berenice walks the distance between the bridge and the river at the end which if they cross they will reach the other side of the land, as Berenice planned.
Berenice finds a boat, abandoned at the edge of the stone ground for the river and decides to row, with the girl in the boat.

Berenice:We'll use this. Come in.

Berenice gets into the boat first and helps Calliope to get in too afterwards.
She takes the oar of the boat and begins to steer it backwards, pushing as hard as she can through the dead water.
Calliope sits inside as calmly as she can and with curiosity but also terror looks at the landscapes around them, the volcanoes the dead water and the lava.

Calliope:Where are we?
Berenice:I think I heard about this place and this river, but I don't remember it's name. The river takes us to the place where your mother is with other people. We will go around the surface.

Berenice continues to sail the boat forward she sees the distance she has to travel from here to the other side that will take them back to the Asphodel Fields, while the cries of the people can still be heard in the distance.
To Calliope's ears, however, it is even worse, as she is forced to close her ears and gather herself, sitting in the boat, trembling. The screams of pain and agony are too much for her and her endurance.
Berenice sees that the girl is truly terrified and decides to find a good way to comfort her and distract her for the time being.
