Three Years Later
“Did you keep all your chargers?” Gulshan asked, browsing the check-list in her hand.
Nayab paused for a second to think. “Yes, iPad, Macbook and phone chargers are in my hand baggage.”
“Oh, a first aid box. You should always have one.” The mother pointed out, making Nayab roll her eyes. “Mom, I am a doctor. Of course I always have basic first aid with me.”
“Toiletries?”
“Yup.”
“All your documents? And cards?”
“All in my hand baggage.” Nayab was folding her clothes and placing them neatly inside her suitcase.
“Keep them safe. Don’t be careless with them.” Gulshan warned.
“Noted, maa.” Nayab promised.
Gulshan set the check-list aside and looked at her daughter packing her stuff. “Are you sure you don’t want me to come to help you settle down? I can get a few days off work.”
Nayab smiled gently. “I am a big girl, maa. I am sure I can handle it.”
Nodding, Gulshan stood up to come close to her daughter. “I know you can handle it. Maybe it is me who isn’t handling it well.”
“Maa..”
“I am reluctant to accept that my little girl doesn’t need me anymore.” Gulshan blinked back her tears.
Nayab shook her head and hugged her mother. “I will always need you.”
“But you’re moving away from home now. You will start an independent life there. We won't get to see you everyday, and that hurts.” Gulshan broke the hug and then cupped Nayab’s face lovingly, “But I also know that this is inevitable. We can’t keep our children to ourselves all our lives. You were bound to leave one day.”
“I promise I will visit as much as I can.”
Gulshan nodded and kissed her forehead. The mother and daughter finished packing in the next hour.
As Nayab gazed around her room, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness at the sight before her. The space that once held all her treasured possessions was now almost unrecognizable, with nearly half of it taken up by stacks of cardboard boxes. Each box was meticulously packed with her belongings, carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and newspaper to ensure their safe transport. The delivery truck came to pick up her stuff in the late afternoon, promising to deliver it to the destination safely.
After that, Nayab got dressed in her high-waisted jeans and a crop top and left to meet Simran and Angad. Simran opened the door for Nayab with a sad pout.
