Nayab thought about meeting the guy. She thought about it for a whole month before saying a hesitant yes to her mother. Gulshan contacted her friend to set up a meeting between Nayab and the guy, whose name was Rohail.
Rohail Qadir was an ENT doctor, who lived in Mumbai. He had finished his PG a year ago and was now a practicing doctor in a government hospital in the mornings, and then he sat in his own clinic in the evenings.
Nayab read his entire life history in the text Gulshan had sent her. And along with it was his phone number and a picture of his. She scrutinized the photo. He was decent-looking.
A week after she had said yes to meeting him, she got a text from Rohail. He had said salam first and then asked if she was free on Sunday. She was, so she replied in affirmation. He sent her the address of a cafe and suggested they met for dinner. She was fine with it.
Sunday arrived quicker than Nayab would have liked. Even though she had said yes on her own, there was still a part of her that was highly uncomfortable with this whole situation.
"What are you wearing?" Simran asked through the screen of Nayab's iPad.
Nayab, who was blow-drying her hair in a bathrobe, looked at Simran before answering, "White jeans and a black top."
"Isn't that too casual for the first meeting with your future husband?" Simran pointed out, while caressing her five month old belly.
Nayab took a deep breath to avoid snapping at her best friend. Then, as calmly as she could, she replied, "First of all, he is not my future husband yet. And second of all, I am not going to dress up for the first date with a guy."
Simran was tempted to remind her that she dolled up pretty nice when Danish was taking her out for the first time, but she decided to not say it out loud. Simran could feel that Nayab was not looking forward to meeting Rohail, and she didn't want to worsen her mood by bringing up memories with Danish.
After drying her hair, Nayab picked up her clothes and walked outside the range of her iPad camera to change.
"I need to leave now." Nayab said, wearing her watch.
Simran nodded. "I know you're not very excited about this. But promise me you'll give him a chance if he's nice."
Nayab rolled her eyes. "Yeah, whatever!"
"See, I know you still miss Danish. But you're never going to meet him again. So you have to let another man in. I just want you to be happy."
"Fine," Nayab knew she was right, "I will try."
After hanging up the call, Nayab made sure that she had her phone and wallet in her bag before she left her apartment. Her car was servicing, so she booked a cab to the restaurant.
