"Where are we?" Martha asked as the trio stepped out of the Tardis. Amanda looked around and breathed in the salty air that surrounded them."Ah, smell that Atlantic breeze. Nice and cold. Lovely. Martha, Amanda, have you met my friend?" The Doctor asked them, causing them to turn to the direction he was facing and looked up.
"Is that? Oh, my God. That's the Statue of Liberty." Amanda said excitedly as she looked at the historic monument in awe. "Holy fuck, I'm actually seeing the statue of liberty!" she exclaimed happily, practically bouncing from how happy she was.
"Gateway to the New World. Give me you tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free." The Doctor quoted as he stared at the sight.
"That's so brilliant. I've always wanted to go to New York. I mean the real New York, not the new, new, new, new, new one." Martha said as Amanda nodded along. It was one of her dreams to go to New York., this was turning out so much better than their previous adventure.
"Same, I also tried to plan trips to New York, well America in general, but I never had enough free time to be able to visit." Amanda told them. "Maybe once I go on tour, I will be able to visit America." she said leisurely as took in the view of the water.
The Doctor motioned back to the city ahead of them. "Well, there's the genuine article. So good, they named it twice. Mind you, it was New Amsterdam originally. Harder to say twice. Now wonder it didn't catch on. New Amsterdam, New Amsterdam." He repeated with a smile on his face. Amanda smiled too before latching on to the man. Because of the whole kidnapping and situation with the Face of Boe, Amanda decided it was good for her to stay by the Doctors side; also, she wanted him to be there if she heard the voice again or remembered anything at all.
"Based on how the Empire State Building isn't even fully built yet it has to be passed the 1920s, maybe early 30s." Amanda hypothesized as she looked at the uncompleted building.
The Doctor joined her as they now gazed at the unfinished building with curiosity. "Work in progress. Still got a couple floors to go, and if I know my history, that makes the date somewhere around-"
"November 1st, 1930." Martha said, causing Amanda to get an impressed look on her face.
"Did you get powers or something? How did you get so good at guessing?" Amanda asked while still looking around at the sights. She finally turned to see Martha with a newspaper in her hand. "Now that's cheating." she said, pointing at the newspaper before looking at Martha. "No fair!"
Martha stuck out her tongue at her before reading the newspaper. "Eighty years ago. It's funny, because you see all those old newsreels all in black and white like it's so far away, but here we are. It's real. It's now. Come on then, you. Where do you want to go first?" Martha asked as she examined the newspaper.
"I think our detour just got longer." The Doctor said as he pointed to the headline on the paper.
"Hooverville Mystery Deepens. What's Hooverville?" Martha asked the Doctor as she read the newspaper headline, not seeing the grim and sad expression on the Doctor's face.
The trio walked around Central Park, taking note of how different everything was. Amanda was excited, as she was often told that she had an American accent and was probably from America, which explained why she was not in any systems in London. She wanted to believe them, but no one had reported her missing nor did anyone do anything to help her look more into the idea. She had hoped that once she saved enough money, she would be able to do more about it but sadly she was way off her goal.
"Herbert Hoover, thirty first President of the USA, came to power a year ago. Up till then New York was a boom town, the Roaring Twenties, and then." The Doctor informed them.
