Eva knew what she had done. She had done exactly what she hadn't meant to do. She had, unintentionally, attracted his attention. She didn't mean to do it, however, that's exactly what she had ended up doing. After the dancing, it was time for dinner. Th food was catered by George's restaurant and it was delicious. The buffet was started, and within moments, the guests started to help themselves with food.
Everyone had a plate in their hand, except for her. She was trying to mingle with the crowd, she was trying to blend in. But everywhere she went, she could sense his gaze following her. What had she done?
She walked towards the buffet and helped herself with a plate of food. She took a little bit of bread, cheese and a few sauteed chicken fries. She could feel his presence behind her. "When are you going out with me?" His voice was as chilly as ice.
She shuddered under his warm presence, feeling his hot breath fanning on her shoulder. She turned around almost immediately, tumbling and then staggering, almost falling into him. He grabbed her waist with his strong arms and looked into her eyes. "When I asked you to go out with me, I wasn't joking."
As her heart thudded rapidly in her chest, she gulped down her saliva and stared into his blue eyes that suddenly looked very dark. "I don't know what to say...."
His grip on her waist became tighter. "You said yes. You said yes."
She shook her head vehemently trying to deny the most obvious fact. "No, no, I didn't. I didn't say yes! In fact....I didn't say anything...I...I just hummed..."
He raised his brows at her. "A Hmm is a yes, don't you think?"
"Why are you doing this?" She whispered, her voice straining.
"I'm doing what?" He seemed confused.
"Why are you trying to go out with me? Why do you wanna date me?" She tried to wiggle out of his arms but he was too damn tall and strong.
"I don't know! I just wanna. I just feel like going out with you." He cleared his throat. "See, Eva, I like you, okay. I like your perseverance, I like how hard you work, I like how sincere you are. I just wanna get to know you....in a personal way. Is that so bad?"
He asked that so cutely that she wanted to give him a kiss then and there. She shook her head. "No, it's not bad... It's---you hate me."
"That's an allegation. I don't hate you." He said, ruefully.
"Then why did you behave like that with me? You knew I was in your class, yet you failed to show any appreciation just for that sake, why?"
He became silent. And then released her waist. "Because I liked you...back then...and meeting you after so long....I didn't know how to handle it..."
"What? You what?" She couldn't believe his words. Were her ears gone for good? Whatever she was hearing, was it true?
"I liked you...and I still do."
This was something that would take her a long time to digest. Vivian Hamilton liked her. Not just that, he had also liked her back in college. She wanted to pinch her skin to determine whether it was a dream, but it wasn't. It was true, and it was happening with her.
"Are you sure you really like me? Don't joke with me..."
He chuckled. "Why would I joke about something like that?"
