34. His Responsibility

If there was one thing Beomgyu wasn't expecting when he woke up in the hospital, it was to see a cop standing in the doorway.

"What were you all doing at the quarry?" He asked, walking over when he saw that Beomgyu was awake. "That place is off limits. Jumping off it is extremely dangerous and prohibited."

"We didn't know." He looked out the door and saw his friends also talking to police. Then, he looked down at his right arm that had bruises and scrapes all over, and his left one that was in a cast. "We didn't- we didn't know."

"Even so, we have to take you in for questioning."

Beomgyu panicked and tried sitting up. "Wait. Can you call Captain Lee? I want to speak with him."

The man looked shocked. "How do you know who he is?"

"I'm his roommate. Just... please. Please let me talk to him."

He thought for a moment before going out to talk to the others. While Beomgyu waited, he finally remembered exactly what happened. Now he was just wondering who the people there were. When he looked back out the door, he saw the police look frightened and the one who was talking to him chuckled awkwardly.

"It's your lucky day kid. I have to call Captain Lee right now anyway."

Beomgyu wasn't allowed to talk to his friends, irritatingly enough, but Taeyong luckily arrived not long later. He perked up when he heard his voice, but couldn't see him.

"The boy was asking for you, but that's the least of our concern," the cop said, gesturing towards Yeonjun. "I told you about what they were doing at the quarry. I didn't tell you that this one saw the scythe tattoo on each members of the group who was there too."

Taeyong bit his lip and sat on the chair besides Yeonjun. "Were they acting weird at all, Yeonjun? Did they do anything weird?"

"The scythe. They're members of Black Reaper, aren't they? I pieced it together when it was too late to properly report them or call the cops on them. That's why the cops started acting weird when I said it and why they called you."

He nodded. "Yes, they are members of Black Reaper, but did they do anything that seemed out of the ordinary?"

"They're the ones who called an ambulance after Beomgyu fell. The guy who called said he was "saving their asses"."

Taeyong realized very quickly what was going on. Whatever reason Black Reaper decided to mess with them, it wasn't to kill them. They were clearly afraid of the consequences after Beomgyu fell. For the most part, it seemed like the list did it's job at protecting them against people who didn't want to be executed.

If someone didn't care about the consequences though, the list meant jack shit.

"What are you planning to do?" Taeyong asked. "Lock them all away?"

"I can't do something like that. I might have to take them in and they'll probably get fined."

"Your sense of justice is good, but I want you to understand that Beomgyu was the witness being protected by Captain Kang. He's seen a murder and experienced a lot more violence at the hands of Black Reaper. Soobin and Kai were also almost in a shooting recently. I think it's reasonable to believe that these young people who just graduated college deserve to be let off easy after they were just trying to have a day of fun. They've all been put through Hell." The cop didn't say anything and Taeyong headed to Beomgyu's door. "Know that no matter what happens, I'll be on their side."
